Are You Just Skating By?

by Robb Sutton

Are you just skating by and taking life as it comes? It is an easy trap to get into as we continue our daily route without a thought in our mind that we could actually shake things up and change our outcomes. A surprising major of people go throughout life on the bleeding edge. They are living week to week, paycheck to paycheck just hoping that someone will realize the greatness that in bodies who they are and reward that with more cash that they can spend faster than they make. When in reality, they are not oozing out greatness…they are doing just enough to get by so they won’t get fired. There no real reward for being extraordinary…just more responsibilities to increase the bottom line for someone else. This creates the “only do enough to get by” mentality that plagues most workers.

That’s my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

– Peter Gibbons “Office Space”

Our challenge as internet entrepreneurs and bloggers is to escape the “just skating by” mentality and achieve real success for ourselves. You are no longer working at the minimum wage you are willing to accept for the return you provide for someone else. You are now keeping that return and your hard work directly affects the amount you bring in! It’s a wonderful world as you venture into the land of opportunity. That greatness that you know lives deep within your soul just waiting to be unleashed on the world sees the rewards of that work. You now have the motivation to be great…not just good enough.

You have to be tired of waiting. Waiting for someone else to hand you something you deserve (or don’t for that matter) is a waste of time. You will end up in frustration as you become one of those that whine about how you are getting a large enough slice of the pie. If you want a larger slice, find and new pie and carve out your own. Suckers become another statistic and if you really want to design your own life and become something unique, you have to defy statistics and create something for yourself. The only real way to beat thin ice and to avoid being a victim of circumstances is by placing the burden and responsibility on yourself to make things better.

The time is now to get off the ice and start living…

Hi Robb,
Great post and brings to mind lyrics from a song from the musical “Tick Tick Boom” by Jonathan Larson (creator of “Rent”, the smash musical). The song is called “Louder than words” and the lyrics are:

“Why should we try to be our best”
“When we can just get by and still gain?”

There are a lot of people who go through the motions and I work with a number of them. I learned a long time ago that no one is going to give you anything. You have to go grab it. Thanks for the reminder.

Best,
Bob

Absolutely…those that are waiting…will always be waiting for the handout. If you want something…you have to go out and grab it.
