Hot Chicks Are Always Going To Have More Twitter Followers Than You

It’s true…hot chicks are always going to have more Twitter followers than you, but…it doesn’t matter because 1/2 of them aren’t even real and the other 1/2 just have a bunch of worthless followers.

You see it all the time. Some hot chick avatar has 75,000+ followers but they are following 82,000+ and you say to yourself, “man…I wish I had that many followers. I am going to do whatever I can to get them.” I am here to tell you that you should much rather have your 1,000 or even 100 followers rather than their 75,000+ that they spam on a regular basis.

In today’s social media environment, there seems to be an obsession to race to the highest number. Whether it be Twitter followers, RSS feed subscribers or pageviews, aspiring bloggers and social media gurus are all watching stats closely to see where they stand. If you have some successful history in blogging/social media, you already know there is a numbers game and the more you have…the more you typically make. But…the really experienced know that the numbers game is about QUALITY more than it is about quantity.

In the pursuit of stat racing, many aspiring entrepreneurs take the road too much traveled of lowering themselves to sleazy tactics in the attempt to attract more followers or subscribers. They throw up controversial blog posts in the interest of viral spreading instead of quality content. They put up pictures of barely dressed women in their avatars and posts. They even go as far to try to call out other successful entrepreneurs to try to attract attention. If they are trying to use sleazy tactics like putting a hot chick as their avatar, they do not know the first thing about making money online and their business is failing before they even get started.

It’s Not A Race and Quality Matters More Than Quantity

I don’t know about you, but when I build up my online businesses, I do not want a bunch of dirty old men on my lists. I want targeted leads that actually want to digest what I have to say. While there is something to the whole “social proof” theory (more people sign up when they see a big stat…wish it wasn’t true but it is), I would much rather have 1,000 highly targeted followers/leads than 100,000 that are just random.

When you are seeking out new subscribers, followers or new visitors to your blogs and social media outlets, the #1 goal should be finding quality, targeted eyes not just a mass quantity.

How To Find Quality, Targeted Leads and Subscribers

So…we know you need to have better followers and subscribers than the internet marketing hot chick, so where do we find these targeted leads? The #1 way I have found to grow my online real estates is simple.

Find where your potential new visitors are hanging out and bring them back to your blogs, Twitter account, Facebook fan pages, etc.

New followers and subscribers are not going to magically find you online. The “build it and they will come” theory to online growth never held true so it is not going to work for you. If you really want to grow your blog and business online, you are going to have to actively search out new visitors and find a way to get them on your pages. Here are a couple of examples to get you started.

  • Actively Guest Post On Popular Blogs In Your Niche – One of the most popular ways to attract new readers is to guest post on other blogs. This theory works incredibly well in niches that have active bloggers. If you are in a niche that does not have a strong blogging community, you are going to have to look to other outlets to pull new readers in.
  • Build Up Online Forum Profiles – Online forums are still the #1 place for dedicated online obsessed to exert their passions and share them with others. For every niche that you would want to blog about, there are a ton of active forums that you can participate in. However, forum communities are extremely sensitive to spam, so becoming a valuable member of the community is essential before you start pushing your content.
  • SEO Targeted Content - In my biking niche, I rely on Google and other search engines to deliver a large portion of my new leads. By doing keyword research with Google Adwords and writing SEO optimized articles using Scribe, I can bring in a massive amount of targeted, new visitors a day. While building up a blog with strong SEO presence can take time, it is still the #1 way to pull in new visitors. For beginning blogs, focusing on long tail keyword strings can bring you in some early success when you can’t compete with the older, larger sites on high competition keywords in the beginning.
  • Use Your Search Functions - Within Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets, there is always a search function that allows you to find targeted leads. While this may not be the most efficient way to get a large number at once, they are highly targeted. By finding out which hash tags your audience is using in Twitter and which Fan Pages they are following on Facebook, you can open your blog and social media accounts to an entirely new audience.
  • Interact and Communicate – Blogging and social media is still a people business. Interact and talk with as many people in your niche as you can. Those friendships that you grow over time will help you grow your business exponentially.

It isn’t rocket science. The more you try to cheat the system and employ tactics that you think are going to get you drastic results with 1/2 the work, them more you are setting yourself up for failure. Just remember, the fake hot chick on Twitter is going to act like they are making butt loads online…but in reality…their un-targeted leads are not making them a thing. Focus on quality and the results will be bigger than you would have ever imagined.

2 Routine Blog Chores That Increase Traffic and Profits

When you have been blogging for several years…or even several months…there are things that happen to your articles that will decrease your traffic and make you less money over time. Old articles are going to start to drop in search engine rankings if not cared for and affiliate links will change or go away completely has companies come and go from affiliate networks or go completely out of business.

It is your job, as the blog owner, to stay on top of these as your blog continues to grow so you can make sure you continue to build a strong reputation online. While everyone might have their own strategy for handling this situation, here is how I attack each issue on a quarterly basis on my blogs.

#1 – Refreshing Old Articles on My Blogs

If you aren’t already, you should be using Google Analytics to track your blog’s traffic, entry points, keywords, etc. With Google being the largest search engine on the planet and Google Analytics being as comprehensive as it is and free…it is a no brainer.

Once, at the beginning of every quarter, I go into Google Analytics with one primary goal: Grabbing a list of my bottom 100 performing posts in search engines.

Steps: Select Date Range –> Traffic Sources –> Search Engines –> Select “Landing Page” from the drop down –> Show rows 100 –> Sort by visits increasing

From this list of 100 articles, you now have your worst performing articles in Google and other search engines online, so it is time to get to work. I start to go down the list and mark articles that I think need to get some love. Now, not all of the articles on this list need to be edited as some are ok down there and are not too important. However, as you go down the list, you will see articles that need some serious help.

What do I do with these low performing articles?

There are several things I do with these low performing articles to get them back up to speed.

  • Rewrite any of the content that needs refreshing (content and times change…you also get better at blogging over time)
  • SEO optimize the article with Scribe - Scribe is a paid SEO optimizer that you probably don’t have. I didn’t believe in it at first but it has done fantastic things for Bike198.com over the past couple of months and by using it…I have been able to jump up results dramatically in certain areas.
  • Make sure all affiliate links are setup correctly – If you bring more traffic to these articles, you better have your monetization setup correctly. Now is the time to do that.
  • Write a list of articles to link back to – After I edit up the article, I write it down on a list. This list is a selection of articles that I  need to link to in future articles to get them re-spidered and indexed more efficiently.

And that is it! When I keep this cycle going, I am in constant rotation of keeping article fresh and income coming into my blogs.

#2 – Optimizing and Checking My Affiliate Links

As I mentioned before, affiliate links can change over time so you can be leaving money on the table and not even know it if your readers are clicking a link and getting no where. I optimize and check my affiliate links in a two stage process that seems to work really well.

1. Click All Of My Affiliate Links To Check Landing Pages

The only way to really find out if your links are broken or hitting the wrong page is to click them. When I first started blogging, this was an extremely cumbersome task as I had to go through each article, find the links and change them if necessary. As you can imagine, as your article count goes up, so does the amount of time and work this takes.

Luckily, these days all of my affiliate links are located in one place in a list with the Ninja Affiliate Plugin, so I can go straight down the list, clicking each link and making adjustments as necessary in an hour instead of days.

2. Optimize Monetization On Top 100 Search Engine Articles

The next thing I do is head right back to Google Analytics and sort that same low performers list as a high performers list in search engines. From this list, I go down one by one and make sure I am monetizing each article correctly. Over time, I have become better at monetizing articles, so by going back into each, I can use my new techniques to squeeze more money out of each article.

Most of my top performing search engine articles on Bike198.com center around reviews, tips and tutorials, so taking this extra step goes a long way in increasing my blog’s bottom line. You might have also picked up a new affiliate program that pays a higher commission or offers products and services that are related to that article that you did not have before. This is the time to make those edits as well.

Quarterly Cycles Insure Long Term Success

The tendency is to want to watch these items on a weekly or even daily basis to make sure you are not leaving anything on the table. However, nothing changes over night and obsessing on this will take you away from your primary goals of content production and promotion, so limit these tasks to a quarterly or bi-yearly basis to make sure you are headed in the right direction.

How I Increased My Newsletter Signups By 150% In 3 Minutes

In the blog world, your #1 resource for traffic and making money online is your list. While some are hesitant to start an email newsletter, the fact remains that if you want to be successful online, it is a necessity…not an option. Since the number of targeted subscribers to your list directly correlates to your success online, bloggers like myself are always testing new ways to get people to signup. Up to this point, a Lightbox Hover has been the highest converting method to convert casual readers into newsletter subscribers and long time readers and…as you have probably noticed…the lightbox hover on RobbSutton.com has drastically changed.

How I Increased My Newsletter Signups by 150% and Higher

It shouldn’t be surprising that people really protect their email address online. With as much spam that hits our inboxes on a regular basis, online security has become a growing problem over the years. As an online entrepreneur/blogger, it is your job to show professionalism and poise when asking for email addresses. So…your first impression is everything in converting that causal first time reader into a subscriber and first impressions all come down to design.

Unfortunately for most bloggers, design is one area that is often too expensive or overlooked in the pursuit of online superstardom and even though Aweber has made drastic strides in making lightbox hovers, you still do not have a high converting, easy to setup design process that will drastically help you grow your blog…

Until now…

A friend of mine in the blogging world, Michael Dunlop, hit me up to start testing a new plugin that is now available to the public. PopupDomination is an extremely easy to configure plugin that takes your newsletter subscription service (I use Aweber) and inserts that into a fantastic Lightbox hover that goes live on your blog. While I was going to throw up some screenshots of how I configured this plugin in 3 minutes and had it live on the sites, I thought it would be better to just show you with this short video.

Product Links: PopupDomination | Aweber

As you can see by the video…I custom taylored the Lightbox to match the site, and the conversions went through the roof.

Does that mean I recommend PopupDomination? Absolutely and I think you are going to see a lot of bloggers do the same.

The $37 dollars this plugin costs has already paid for itself and more on my blogs in only 3 days of operation.

The only thing I wish it had (which is already in development) is split testing and when that feature goes live…it is going to add an extremely strong foundation to an already fantastic plugin.

The Two Groups That Are 99% Of Your Blog Income

If you are looking to make income from your blogging, you need to turn your efforts online into dollars by readers consuming either your products and services or the products and services of others that you are affiliated with (or both).

By targeting a buying public, you can maximize your profits and insure a high conversion rate on your blog. We all want to be able to turn words into dollars right?! Often wonder how some blogs can make a killing without an enormous amount of traffic? Well…you better make sure you are attracting the right audience to accomplish that…so let’s break it down for real success.

The Beginning Blogger Trap

Before we jump into the exact groups you want to target, let’s talk a little bit about a route that beginning bloggers take that is the completely wrong road. I see a lot of beginning bloggers striving for approval from the pros in their field. If they are blogging about blogging, they are trying to get top bloggers to comment on their articles. If they are blogging about home improvement, they are writing articles that would even make Bob Vila drop his jaw. This is a trap you need to avoid!

When you are jumping after the approval of top pro’s in your niche, you are tailoring your articles to a group of producers…not consumers.

For your blog to be successful, you need to be impressing a group of readers that will actually pull out the plastic and consume products and services…not ones that are creating their own.

Stop writing over the top, complicated articles to inflate your own self worth by trying to gain the approval of professionals if you want to make money with your blogging.

The 2 Groups You Should Be Targeting With Your Writing

There are two groups of people that you should be targeting with your writing style and language in your blog articles.

  1. Beginners
  2. Intermediates

Why? Because they are looking for solutions to their problems within your niche. They need to buy your information and services to bring their game to a whole new level. When you start delivering on those promises by providing high quality recommendations and products, they will become repeat visitors and consumers of your recommendations and content. See how the cycle works?

How Do I Attract That Audience With My Writing?

There are several ways you can attract the beginning to intermediate audience, but here are a couple of sure fire ways to get you up and rolling.

1. Talk Simple But Not “Down”

When I write my blog articles, I try to make sure that 90% of my readers will completely understand everything in the article. If there are terms or ideas that are on a more advanced level, I go out of my way to either explain that point further or provide a resource where that explanation can be found (most likely on my blog). When you let the ego jump in and try to sound too much like an expert, you lose your target audience. Your blog articles should teach and inform, but also be careful not to sound condescending. No one likes to be talked down to but 99% of readers love to learn something new.

2. Provide Static Resources

Are there complicated terms within your niche? Is there standard/staple content that everyone should know within your niche (even if you take it for granted)? By creating resources through blog articles or static pages, you are helping those readers that may not completely understand the concepts and ideas within your niche topic. When you solve this issue for your beginning readers, you become their resource online. As a bonus, when you need to point your reader in the direction of an explanation of complicated terms or ideas in your articles, you are pointing them to a page on your blog instead of an outside resource.

3. Provide Most of Your Information for Free

Beginner and intermediate readers of your blog are going to be gun shy of paid content and products. Chances are they have been down a bad road or two online, so there defenses are up on why they shouldn’t spend any money on what you have produced or what you are promoting. By providing high quality content for free via articles, ebooks and newsletters, you can build up your own reputation to insure that your paid products convert well in the long run. Your reputation with your new readers starts from day one. Get started on the right foot with over the top, quality content for free. The conversion down the road will be much easier.

The #1 Reason Why Blogs Make Money

They solve the problems of people within a given niche and do so in real time with a developed relationship. If you are constantly on the search to impress the pros…you will never end up being one.

Blogs make money because they fulfill a need.

When you start tailoring your blog and content with the idea of making money online, keep in mind your target buying audience. After all…they are the ones that generate the dollars.

30 Most Influential Bloggers and Website Owners of 2010

2010 is and has been a great year for bloggers and website owners. As the blogging industry continues to stray away from its journaling past to evolve into a solid business platform, we are seeing success by entrepreneurial spirits all over the world. Never before have people from across the globe been able to connect as easily both personally and professionally to work together towards a common goal.

Throughout my blogging career, there have been numerous site owners and bloggers that have directly influenced and affected how I run my business. The following list is a collection of those individuals and the online real-estate they represent. This is by no means a claim that they are the most influential on the web. These bloggers and website owners have directly affected how I blog and business build as well as affected those around me.

Some of these names will make you think; “oh…here we go again.” as their spread of influence can not be denied. However, hopefully you find some names on this list outside of the blogging/MMO niche that you can observe and pull influence from to increase your success.

Everyone has their list…who is on yours?

Make More Money Online By Diversifying Income Streams

Scouring the web…you are going to find everyone’s 2 cents on how they think you should make money on your blog. While there are a ton of great ideas out there, there is also a lot of crap that you have to sift through to find the good stuff…and many times…the people talking about making money online actually do not make a cent. They are just trying to make money online by talking about making money online. Kind of redundent and not credible if you ask me…but if it is your cup of tea…go for it I guess. Anyways…after that short ramble…I am going to tell you how I actually make money online and it is through a simple business principle of diversification.

Make More Money Online By Diversifying Income Streams

As a blogger, you have a lot of different outlets to bring in income. In all reality, you have more options than brick and mortar businesses as you can adapt and change on the fly with very little overhead cost associated with that change. For that reason, you are seeing a lot of bloggers start to make a killing by staying on top of trends and backing their blog with solid business models. So let’s take a look at how you can make money on your blog…

  • PPC campaigns – Adsense, etc.
  • CPM – Pay per impression campaigns
  • Direct Advertising Campaigns
  • Affiliate Revenue – Get paid a percentage for promoting a product or service
  • Our Own Products – Electronic, Hard Goods, Services

Now…these are not the only ways you can make money on your blog, but they are the most popular as they typically give you the biggest return on your time investment. Most bloggers tend to lean heavily towards one method or only use the one they got to pick them up a couple of bucks. Guess what?! I believe that is a bad thing and I am about to tell you why.

Why You Do Not Want To Be Reliant On One Income Stream

When you are reliant on one type of income stream, you are crippling your chances of success if something happens to that method of making money online.

  • With PPC campaigns…payouts can fluctuate.
  • With CMP’s…you can lose advertisers or rates can decrease.
  • With Direct Advertising Campaigns…you can lose advertisers or rates can decrease.
  • With Affiliate Revenue…you can hit a soft spot in the economy or run out of products to promote.
  • With Your Own Products…you get a nice initial wave of income, but you have to create more products down the road.

Each of these circumstances can drastically change your business plan or just be a minor bump in the road. As you take a look at your blog, you need to ask yourself one quick question.

What would happen to my revenue if my #1 main income stream went away tomorrow?

If that question sends you into a worrying tailspin and makes the color leave your face, you need to take a objective look at how your blog is generating revenue and start to diversify your income streams.

Why Diversification?

My plan from day one when I started blogging was to build up as many income streams that work as possible. By having multiple sources all bringing in income, I am not reliant on one source of dollars coming into my sites. There have been times when companies dropped their affiliate programs or I needed to put my own products on hold that I was not worried about the bills because the rest of the streams picked up the slack.

When you start to take an objective look at really successful blogs online, are they reliant on one income stream or multiple? 9 times out of 10, you are probably interacting with all of their streams (or at least most of them) and do not even know it! By mixing in as many of the methods above as you can (use only the ones that work of course…and you figure this out by testing them), you can increase your chances of success for the long haul and not have to worry if something doesn’t quite go your way one day.

Bike198.com: A Personal Example

On Bike198.com, I have my own products, direct advertising, affiliate revenue and PPC campaigns that all pull their weight to achieve the ultimate goal…make an income online.

  • Ramped Riding – eBook that makes you a better mountain biker
  • Adsense – PPC
  • Direct Advertising
  • Affiliate Revenue – Heavily product based through reviews
  • Sale of Goods – All of that product I review has to go somewhere!

Each day, these income streams interact with my readers in a non-competing atmosphere (ex. I don’t promote other “Riding Tips” eBooks because I have my own.) that creates results.

I also diversify the methods in which my readers interact with my money making avenues by providing on page resources and a quality newsletter to back it up. By diversifying your income streams and the methods your readers interact with those income streams, you are creating a system that will work on its own.

Now…Look At Your Blogging…

Now, you have seen a glimpse into how I do it…how do you? It is time to take an objective look at how your blog makes money. Are you doing everything you can to insure your success? Or are you just winging it and hoping for the best?

Successful blogging from a monetary standpoint takes careful planning and testing. Far too many bloggers just publish articles and hope for the best. If you really want to make a living online, you have to attack it with a solid plan and proper testing. Once you have found one that works, continue fine tuning it while you get another revenue stream up and running…

Side Note: If you haven’t already, you MUST HAVE  an email newsletter on your blog to really see success over time. Sign up with a service like Aweber and get started with your newsletter today. It will make the difference from being successful and just another blogger who didn’t make it. Invest in your future.

Interview: Michael Dunlop – Income Diary – Retire at 21 – Online Entrepreneur

Michael Dunlop has had a massive amount of success online with Income Diary and Retire at 21. This young, online entrepreneur has also interviewed some of the best in the business, so his unique perspective on blogging and making money online is based off of numerous success stories and high profile workshops.

Having started this process at the young age of 16, this 21 year entrepreneur is setting the online world on fire and in this interview…we go into the how and why of the different aspects of his business.

[display_podcast]

Robb: Hey guys. It’s Robb Sutton from RobbSutton.com.   On the phone today, I’ve got Michael Dunlop from IncomeDiary.com and RetireAt21.com.  How are you doing today?

Michael: I’m doing great, Robb. It’s great to be here and I’m excited about sharing some great advice and sharing my story.

Robb: Awesome. I really appreciate you taking the time out today to talk to me and for our readers and everyone else. Why don’t we just go ahead and jump right in it. In the beginning, why didd you start blogging?

Michael: Because I wanted money. I sort of got into it by accident. At the time I didn’t know it was blogging. It just made sense to have a CMS, and it basically got programmed to build what we know today as a blogging platform.

It went well. I was probably about 15 or so. After doing other stuff online, it just seemed to be an easier way to make money than all the stresses with other ideas like selling an actual product, which can be time consuming.

Robb: Definitely. You started this process at a pretty young age of 15, 16 with RetireAt21. How long was it before you saw real results both as kind of a progression with subscribers and monetarily with that blog?

Michael: When did I see a good result? I think it’s when I sort of changed how I delivered my content. I saw a great response right at the beginning.

My first site was actually WebDesignDev before Retire At 21. Then when Retire At 21 actually came around I sort of placed aside WebDesignDev and then later re-did it. It’s a long story, but to keep it short, that’s what I’m going to say.

With WebDesignDev, what I did was I did the whole tutorial scene. Delivering step-by-step tutorials is great, because it can clearly show someone how to do something, unlike just giving them a general idea.

I got some great results with that, but with Retire At 21, it was a sort of niche that thousands of other people were in and they were doing this whole, “I’m going to teach you how to make money.”

I don’t really find it great learning from someone who generally isn’t making that much money. I don’t really like to learn from those people, and so I wasn’t really doing very well, because that’s generally what I was doing. I was just pretty much doing what everyone else was doing.

So I basically thought, “Hey, so why don’t I interview all the people that are doing really well, and then I will actually have authority content and it will be actually, genuinely good advice.”

Robb: Right.

Michael: So once I started doing that, that was really cool. It sort of opened me up to have some great contacts. It’s sort of by mistake. You just want to interview them, because you want to find out more about them, but you sort of have a connection after that.

After that you can ask them to do other things with you. Like when I interviewed you. We obviously knew more about each other once we interviewed each other.

Robb: Right.

Michael: You can do a guest post, and we’ve connected a couple times after that as well, and stuff like that. It’s sort of just a great way to connect with other entrepreneurs.

Robb: Yes, that brings up a lot of opportunities for the future as well.

Michael: Yeah, great ones, and especially if you plan to bring out product and want affiliates. It’s much easier to ask for someone to sell your product once you already know them.

Another thing I did was start doing lists. I first did this with Retire At 21, and at the time I was getting 1,000 visitors a day. I did my first Top List and it was Top Earning Young Entrepreneurs and how much they were worth.

It wasn’t actually even finished, somehow it got leaked, and that day it got over 50,000 visitors. It just kept growing from there. I think it was just the sort of way we start seeing results and seeing like what I was doing was just changing my approach to how I altered my content.

Robb: What advice would you give young entrepreneurs looking to make an income online?

Michael: Start. I think that’s it. It’s something, probably a lot of people will tell you that. It’s just like do it, because so many people don’t actually start and that’s pretty much the main reason people fail.

Apart from that, I just re-emphasize the whole fact about delivering what you’re doing, to deliver it in a different way. If everyone’s writing the exact same thing, then there’s no reason why they should go to you over other people. When you deliver your content in a different way, it sort of gives them more of a reason to go and see.

Robb: At what point in your blogging did something change? When I talk to a lot of bloggers they say, “There was this point in time where I knew something had changed,” and it started to be more of a faster progression, I guess you could say.

Is there a point in your blogging that you can look back on? A day or a period of time where you knew something had just gotten over that plateau and you were really getting into successful blogging?

Michael: Yeah. It was probably the day I launched Income Diary. Basically, when I started Income Diary, I came up with the idea about a week before and spent about two days just installing the blog and finding someone to interview for it.

It was really nothing impressive. I just put it together. It was the fact that the way I monetized the site changed my blogging forever. If you can make a lot more money from it, it means you can do so many other things with your blog.

Generally if you’re not making much money, you can’t afford to do great advertising, you can’t get a great theme, you can’t all these other things. I wasn’t selling advertising space or sell Google AdSense. That stuff just doesn’t work.

It works, but it doesn’t work on the level other things can work for you. Instead of making $1,000 a month, I found out potentially how to make $10,000 a month and up. Obviously, once you can do that it’s a game changer.

Robb: Well, since you brought it up, Income Diary has been kind of a really huge hit online with not only bloggers, but other entrepreneurs. When did you actually come up with the idea and what was your inspiration behind IncomeDiary.com?

Michael: Basically, I had all these people coming to me saying, “How do I create a website? How do I create a blog? How do I make money online?”

At the time, I had a really basic guide on Retire At 21 showing them this is how to sort this out on the website. It was really bad. It was just basically saying, “Buy a domain. Buy hosting,” and then anything else I could think of to sell them. It just wasn’t well thought out.

So I thought, “Hey, what’s the best way to deliver this content, because I need to build my email list, so why don’t I start an e-course?”

Basically, I knew I had to deliver this thing. Retire At 21 had so many bugs and errors, and it’s starting to be a 13 year old program. That’s really not a great way to start a website. I just thought, let’s start with a new site.

I love building things. I’m not so much one for keeping something going or maintaining something. I like to be inventive. I was like really pumped up doing that. I just started thinking I have this domain, IncomeDiary.com, which I bought off a guy called Tom. I paid $100 for it.

I thought, “Hey, this is great. I can start putting things together.” I thought to put out an e-course and it went really well. I actually heard recently a great quote and it was by Stewart Wild.  I don’t know it exactly, but the gist of it is, “Find a problem, create a solution, and then build them.”

That was pretty much what I did with my e-course. I found a problem. Everyone wanted to create a website and didn’t know how to. I created a solution and then built them. I built in monetization strategy, pretty much an affiliate-based one, and it worked. So that’s sort of the principle I went with.

Robb: We’ve talked about this before, but IncomeDiary.com uses this theory that you refer to as “No leakage.” There are other online entrepreneurs that use this same theory. Would you like to go into that concept further and how it pertains to blogging?

Michael: Yes. It’s really important. Basically, so many people – and I’m not saying it’s wrong, just if you want to make more money it’s something you have to do. Typically people will have a blog roll. It’s what every blog comes with.

Well, the idea of having links to other sites and not getting paid for it means you’re not going to make as much money, because your readers will go to their blog instead of clicking your ads or clicking your affiliate links or signing up for your newsletter.

You want to basically get down the amount of ways that people can get out of your site without making you money or signing up for your list. That can be done in loads of ways.

I started just playing with Crazy Egg, which is some software that basically tells you where people are clicking and what’s happening. You can see what does work and what doesn’t work.

If people aren’t opting into this list, if people aren’t clicking these affiliate links, why aren’t they? Maybe you add a picture next to them. What I did was I added a green stop sign, which seemed to go from no clicks on the affiliate link to about 15 a day. It made a huge difference there.

Basically, you want to get them onto your list. That’s pretty much the main idea, because once they’re on your list, they’re with you as long as you provide something to them.

You don’t want them to leave your site without making you money. You want to get down all the links. You want to get down all the potential ways to get out of the site, even advertisers. If people advertise on your site, that must mean they’re getting a big enough return.

Typically, people advertise on your site to promote an affiliate offer. If it works for them, then it should work for you if you promote stats or an alert or stuff like that. It’s always best to go with the affiliate group. That’s what I found.

Robb: Over the course of Income Diary’s lifespan, you’ve had the chance to interview a lot of entrepreneurs and people who are making money online.

With this diverse crowd of successful individuals, are there any common themes that you seem to see repeat themselves regardless of their business model or niche?

Michael: Yeah. Typically most of them, about 95% of them, work really hard. Something that people don’t see enough in our industry is that you have to work hard, because you can get quite a bit of success without too much, but to really take that to a whole new level, you have to sort of dig in and get working really, really hard.

Another thing is to have a lot of fun. You sort of burn out if you don’t have a good balance of business and pleasure. They enjoy what they’re doing. They’re passionate about it. If you’re not passionate, you couldn’t bring that across in what you’re doing. I think that sort of sums up entrepreneurs that are successful.

Robb: A lot of bloggers look to interviews and podcasts as a way to expand the offerings on their blog. What advice do you have with bloggers that are nervous about this transition and how to get started actually interviewing people in their topic?

Michael: The first thing is you need to get some interviewees. When I started, I didn’t really know how to go about it. I just basically started emailing them. It actually was quite successful.

A lot of people, especially entrepreneurs, they want to give back. They like helping people, because to get to where they are today, usually someone’s helped them.

Usually with a lot of people, they just like talking about themselves. They like to be interviewed just because it makes them feel good about themselves. I think you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get some of the higher level people you’d like to interview.

The most important thing is really your email you send to them. You want to make sure it applies and it’s attractive to them. Tell them that you know who they are.

One big flaw I see with people asking me for an interview is they don’t make it feel personal.  If we’re doing something for you, we don’t want to know that you sent the same email to 100 other people. Always remember to say, “Hello, Michael,” to mention my websites, or to mention something about it to make sure I know.

What I do in my email is I’m like, “I’m very impressed with your speech at this seminar, or your new addition to your site,” or something just to make it personal and to make them feel good about themselves.

Then tell them what’s in it for them.  Potentially, if you’ve got 1,000 visitors a day or something, you’re one of the biggest sites in golf or something, you want to emphasize that. That always helps.

Once you’ve got the interview, it can be done two ways. It could be done over the email, and probably my first 100 interviews were over email. Once you say email or phone, you get a lot more people to accept your interview, because they don’t really want to go off and type all this stuff up for you.

I like audio best, because you can get it transcribed and then people can either have it as audio or as a transcript in text. To record it, I use Pamela for Skype. You use Cool Recorder, don’t you?

Robb: Right. It’s a Mac only program.

Michael: Yeah. So to record you can do that. Then once you’ve got it recorded there’s loads of plug-ins for WordPress to get it out. I can’t actually remember which one I’m using, but just go to WordPress.org, I think.

Robb: I think I use PodPress, just like I am on my sites. That seems to work.

Michael: No. I used to use PodPress, and I won’t. Something went wrong with it, so I moved over to what I think it’s just called PodCasting, which is really annoying, because when you’re trying to Google it, you know, PodCasting WordPress blogging, it brings up all the other plug-ins, which doesn’t really work.

And too, some of you may want to transcribe your interview. I know you have a transcriber, Robb. I use a service called CastingWords.com. They’re generally quite cheap.

They go from about $.75 a minute to $2.50 a minute, depending on how quickly you want it. The quickest is 24 hours, and if you want it within two weeks, they do it real cheap. That’s a great way to get it transcribed.

Transcribing it is well worth it, because you can have great SEO power. All this text for the search engines does wonders for your blog.

I rank first page for so many of my interviewees, and that’s something not done too easily. I have to tell you that. Like for example, Ryan Deiss, he’s one of the biggest information marketers on the internet. He brings out products, a dozen a year or something. He’s a big guy.

I can rank first page for him, just because I interviewed him. They’ve got some great content, lots of it, thousands of words, and they’ve got all these links to it and it works really well.

That’s good, because if you interview someone in your niche, for example, Ryan Deiss, when people go to buy a product from Ryan, they’ll go to my site first, because they want to find out about him.

Then I can promote his product in the interview, so hopefully they’ll go and buy it through me. It’s a great way to pick up affiliate commissions as well.

Robb: What is your favorite aspect of blogging?

Michael: Just the fact that it’s on my terms. I get to do what I like, when I like. Some days I can work hard, some days I can work not so hard. Typically there will be a passive income element to it, so even if I don’t work for a week, I will still make a great income.

Obviously, that will start going down after a couple weeks. Say you were making like $10,000 a month and you stop working. It’s not going to go down to zero, but it will probably go down to a certain number and then stay there, because Google can only send you so much a day.

When you’re posting every day, you’ve got loads of more traffic coming in, because you’ve got your RSS feed and you’ve got your Twitter and you’ve got a buzz going. The second you lose that buzz, you’re going to go down a few notches, but you’re not going to go down at all.

Like I always will have a couple thousand visitors a day just from Google and people discovering my content. I don’t worry about that too much.

Robb: If you had one piece of advice for new bloggers looking to make an income online, what would it be?

Michael: Affiliate marketing. It’s hard really, because there’s a lot of mistakes to make and it could be done so easily. Really to get traffic all you need is good content. With good content they will find your site and Google will index you. People will share it on social networks. That’s pretty much all you have to do.

Once you’ve got traffic, you’ve got to monetize it. Typically with banner ads especially, it can be a slow process if you’re new to blogging, because your blog’s new. People are like, “Hey, it’s new. I don’t know if it’s got traffic yet. I don’t know if I should buy it.”

They can’t see anything strong. The blog isn’t strong yet. So with affiliate income, your first visitor can make you money, if you convert them. Now I’m sure most people know affiliate marketing is basically you get paid for sending a sale to someone.

Robb: You get a commission off of each.

Michael: Yeah, you get a commission. I think that’s the most important thing for a new blogger is probably working out what angle they’re approaching their niche with. There are some things that you’ll never make money with, and it’s surprising how many people go into those niches.

There are not many niches, but the angle or just sort of approach to it, it just doesn’t make money. It’s like you can’t have a blog or a business about how you love bottled water or something, because there’s never going to be enough people to share that passion, to share that interest, to actually make money.

You don’t want to go for something too broad, but you want to go for something that you’re going to have scope with, so you can grow the business. It’s not going to be just something small.

Robb: There has to be a market there to make it work.

Michael: Exactly.

Robb: If you have one product or coaching program outside of anything you have that you would recommend, what would it be?

Michael: I’m a big believer in workshops and seminars. I haven’t really bought many products, but I have been to quite a few seminars.

I’d highly recommend Ryan Lee’s Continuity Seminar and Yanik Silver’s Underground event. I have to say Yanik’s, because I’ve been to his five times. It’s pretty much been my education. Instead of going to college and going to learn like everyone else does, I’ve gone to his seminar once a year and that’s all the education I need. I think you can learn a lot more there than you can by buying a product. You get so many different speakers.

And it’s not just that, it’s the contacts you pick up. You get so much time to network and you meet so many other entrepreneurs that can really help you grow your business.

Robb: Your favorite food?

Michael: Favorite food? Roast chicken.

Robb: Favorite drink?

Michael: Orange juice.

Robb: Your favorite thing to do away from the keyboard?

Michael: I’m sure a lot of people probably think Xbox for me, because I go on about it quite a lot over at Twitter and Facebook, and when I see people in general. I think I like sports in general. It doesn’t really matter what it is, as long as it’s something active and blood pumping. So just sports in general, really.

Robb: Who inspires you the most?

Michael: I really don’t know. I think it’s just my competition, probably, because I’m quite competitive. When I see competition do something, I’m inspired to really get up, stand up and do something to make sure I can make them say, “Damn it, Michael’s done something cool again.”

People love a power game, so I know it’s a weird answer to get to say your competition, but they’re the guys that make me want to up my game constantly. I like being top dog really.

Robb: The friendly competition that keeps on making quality better, right?

Michael: Yeah. I mean, don’t think for a minute, anyone listening to this, that I don’t like them, or that we’re not really competition. I’m not saying like they’re nothing. Between a lot of us, we help each other on good terms.

Robb: Right. If you were not blogging today, what do you think you’d be doing?

Michael: I know that I’d have to do something entrepreneurial, because I failed pretty much on my exams and there’s no way I’d go into working minimum wage for somebody. I don’t know. Before I started blogging I was buying and selling stuff, you know, buy low, sell high.

I’d be doing something like that. I may have to start small like a market store, but I know probably by now if I did start it at the same time as my blogging, I’d have a shop, if not a chain of shops.

Robb: If you had to do it all over again, would you do anything differently?

Michael: Yeah, there’s a lot. Obviously I appreciate the mistakes I made, because it makes you a better person and a better blogger, but there are so many things that would have just saved time.

A lot of people will get quotes for design work or coding or hosting, and they compare prices instead of comparing what you’re really getting.

It’s not really price I look for anymore. You know how it’s worth spending more money to get a better job done? That’s come across in design work, coding and hosting – very much with hosting.

When you start, you want to cut all the costs that you can. I had to buy my first server and realistically, the server that I’m on now is like $400, and I think I got my server for about $30 or $40 a month.

That was a nightmare. They were sort of cowboys. They ran their business like they really didn’t care about their customers. They just wanted the money there and then.

They pretty much screwed me over and I lost the site because of it. I wouldn’t worry so much about how much something cost me, because essentially with the money I invested I made the return.

Robb: I had that same situation happen one time right before a launch and their servers went down for two days. That day after it came back up, I swapped everything and went for quality over price and never looked back. It’s night and day difference when you re-invest back into your business instead of just trying to pull all the money out of it.

Michael: Yeah. Don’t think for a minute that you could not keep investing in your business. I was looking at my accounts for January and I think there was a little minor $20, I think that’s all I really invested in new things, but some months it’s a whole month’s earnings that I would invest into new ideas and new concepts.

You have to constantly be re-investing and upping your game in new things, because that’s the only way you’re going to make more money and up your game. In my opinion, it’s the most fun thing in taking the risks and seeing the rewards.

Robb: Absolutely. 2010’s going to be a pretty big year for successful blogging. What can we expect to see out of you in the next calendar year?

Michael: I’ve got my own – not sure it’s going to be just blogging – but a product on basically how what I’ve done what I’ve done in the last year and how you can follow suit and the exact system I’ve done.

Apart from that, I plan to keep blogging and enjoying life. I’m moving out in two weeks time. I just want to explore life, enjoy it, and work hard while I’m young.

A quote that stuck with me is, “Entrepreneurship is about living a few years of your life like most won’t, so you can live the rest of your life like most can’t,” which basically means, work really hard now and you won’t have to work for the rest of your life.

That’s pretty much how I want to keep blogging. I want to get it done now and not look back and think, “If I worked harder…” and stuff like that. We’ve got such a great opportunity right in front of us. This is the time where a lot of money could be made for everyone, even if you’re starting today.

Look at IncomeDiary.com. It’s not even a year old and within a couple months of launching it was one of the biggest blogs in making money online. It had its first 100,000 visitors in its first month. It took me like a day or two to set up.

It’s something everyone can be doing. It doesn’t have to be blogging, it can be doing anything, but at least make that effort to start and keep at it.

Robb: Yeah, you always talk to those people who had great ideas that they never started. It’s going to be the next big thing, you just wait and see,” and they never even take the first step.

Michael: Right. Usually, it could have been a good thing. What I’d say is don’t live with regret, and regret usually comes when you don’t do something. Just do something. Do it. Take a leaf out of Nike’s book.

Robb: That’s about all I’ve got. Anything you want to add before we wrap this up?

Michael: No, not particularly. I just definitely re-emphasize the point just do it. I’ve known so many people that I’ve come across, I’ve known personally and people who come to my site, and not enough people go off and take action.

Just say you make $1,000 a month. You’ll appreciate your life a lot more just having that flexibility, because perhaps you don’t have to work as hard or you can take a trip with your wife, or you can do other things. I think once you get going you will really appreciate it.

Robb: Thanks, Mike, for taking the time to talk with us today.

Michael: No probably at all, Robb. I enjoyed it and I hope to see you soon.

Robb: Absolutely.

1 Thing Your Blog Can't Live Without

I was having lunch with a friend of mine last week and we were talking about blog monetization. He has a killer idea, incredible design and fantastic content. He even sells t-shirts on site as a method of bringing in cash from his efforts. The problem…traffic is up and he is not making that much money. In search of an income generating answer, we took a look at his model and figured out that one missing key.

Active Newsletter: The 1 Thing Your Blog Can Not Live Without

It’s true. While we all like to think that enough traffic will gain you the blogging income of your dreams, that is still not the case. If you do not have an active newsletter at this point in time, you are already behind the 8 ball in creating an income generating blog. You can do everything you are supposed to on site, but…at the end of the day…your newsletter subscribers will be your ATM machine as you look to expand your money making opportunities.

Why Do You Need A Newsletter?

Let’s take a look at why your blog needs a newsletter.

  • It captures leads that would normally be lost – By getting that email address, you are able to stay in touch with readers through their email (the most read thing on the web) and bring them back to your blog and content. A vast majority of these readers may have never landed back on your pages, so you are insuring growth over time.
  • Conversions are much higher in newsletters than on site – Let’s put it this way…you released a new eBook or T-Shirt design. Once everything was complete, you wrote a blog post and put up the promotional materials on your site. New visitors and returning visitors see the materials and blog post as they hit up your corner of the web that day. However, their man focus is on new content and not your latest and greatest product. Now…you also have about 1,500 people signed up to your newsletter, so you send out an email announcing your new release. In your email, there is zero distraction. Which one do you think is going to convert better?
  • Newsletters create automated sales funnels – With any well performing newsletter, you are setting up broadcast emails that produce original quality content for your subscribers. This process is completely automated after setup, so once the subscriber signs up…you do not have to do a thing! Now…imagine you are providing quality content with related affiliate promotions. You have just put your money making machine on autopilot as new subscribers are receiving those emails on a daily basis.

Your goal as a site owner is to capture as many free leads as you possibly can, provide quality/original content to those leads and covert that into dollars you can live off of. Having a quality newsletter subscription is the #1 way to accomplish that goal, so you need to sign up with Aweber (I use Aweber for all of my sites and you can get started for $1) or another email service and get started today.

Tomorrow, I’ll show you some hooks I use to attract more subscribers and keep them subscribed to my newsletters. In today’s world, people protect their email addresses more than their own kids, so there are some tips and tricks you can use to insure greater success.

How To Drastically Increase Your Affiliate Commissions

We are always looking for new and inventive ways to make more money online. For most of us, are core business is outside of the make money online or blogging niche, so we have to apply the tips and tricks in our own unique ways to cater to our audiences and increase our revenues.

Over the past week and a half, I have been testing a new theory that I picked up from a long time site owner to increase my affiliate commissions on Bike198.com, and…guess what…it worked much better than I would have ever imagined.

Where This Story Starts

I ran into the same scenario over and over again. I have had readers asking me constantly how to help out the site because they love the content delivered on a daily basis. After I explain the process of affiliate commissions from page referrals, I get the same answer almost every time.

Man! I wish I would have known! I read your article and then went to xxx retailer and bought the product, but I didn’t click on your link!

After enough of that money left on the table, I started looking for ways to educate my readers on how they can help the site grow and continue to deliver top shelf content on a regular basis.

The World Outside Of Blogging

Outside of our blogging niche, there are very few of your readers that will actually understand how to help your site. All they know is that you have a couple of ads showing and you continue to pump out content. Outside of that, they will not understand affiliate marketing simply because they have not had to deal with it on a personal level.

With this understanding, I went looking for ways to help my readers understand the process a little bit better than they were now.

Now…it is important at this point to understand that I am attempting to convert readers that are targeted leads for my affiliate retails from my content through rss or organic search. Theses are not paid leads through advertising or PPC campaigns so this process does not violate any of the agreements with these retailers.

During my search, I hit up one of my favorite photography sites, KenRockwell.com. Ken has been full time blogging for a long time, so his methods have been tried and true in a product niche. At the bottom of every post…so you see this.

Ken Rockwell

Genius! Simple and effective. So it was time for testing. At the bottom of each of my posts on Mountain.Bike198.com, you now see the following box.

Did You Know

The result: There was a drastic increase in affiliate commissions in just the first 72 hours. If that is not results…I don’t know what is.

Some Things To Consider

Now…there are still some things you need to consider before you jump in and test this theory on your blog.

Your Market

Some markets will be more receptive to this than others. For instance, in the blogging and make money online niche, we all know the routine. So putting up a box like this at the end of your posts might look like you are begging for more money which would not be a good thing for your audience. This is going to work best in situations where your audience is actively looking for ways to help your site and they do not know how the internet world works.

Your Affiliate Agreements

Check and double check your affiliate agreements to make sure this does not violate them in anyway. Most agreements center around keyword selection for PPC campaigns, but you need to be sure before jumping in head first.

Test Different Phrases/Colors/Etc.

Over the course of this testing period, I will be testing different ways of wording this box, link colors and box colors to see what performs the best on my site. Just because you found something that works, that does not mean you stop the testing process.

This has been a very positive experience for both my readers and the general health of the site. Hopefully, you can adapt this theory to your blogs as well to increase commissions and get one step closer to going full time.
