The Secret Key To Productivity and Relaxation

If there is one thing we all need to do in this world, it is to relax and be more productive. Fast paced lifestyles full of stress that will not matter 5 years down the road is a quick highway to a heart attack. As we continue to make every thought…every action…every annoyance a reason to stress and worry, we are aging ourselves and crippling our careers, professional life and blogs at the same time. The self destructive circle of worry and stress will not only be hazardous to you health, but it will restrict and strangle what you are trying to accomplish in your own life.

So what is the secret key to productivity and relaxation? Stop worrying about things that do not really matter.

How To Stop Worrying About Things That Don’t Really Matter

It’s not an easy road by any means and typing up this article is far easier than following this theory in practice. If you could rid your life of all worry and stress related to people and events that do not really matter, can you imagine how much more relaxed and productive you would be in the long haul? Completely realizing this is not an easy, here are a couple of suggestions, tips and random thoughts to help you down the road.

Forget Things That Do Not Matter In 5 Days – So often, we get caught up in the days events that we get completely worked up in scenarios and thought processes that are going to have little to no impact on our lives 5 days from now. Once you realize you are in a circle of misguided thinking that is a complete waste of time, the trick is getting out of it. By stepping back out of the situation at hand, you can see that there is no effect on your life in the near future. Is it really worth getting all stressed out about if there is no impact?

Ignore Gossipers - It is tempting to sit around and listen, converse and spread the latest gossip of the day. But…by engaging in these activities, you are adding stress and wasted time into your life. Not only that…you are inviting even more stress and wasted time in the future by getting yourself involved with people who gossip frequently. Get rid of the wasted time in your life and use those precious minutes to enrich and prosper. One other thing to note…when they are not talking to you…they are probably talking about you.

Rid Your Life Of Busy Work – There are a lot of things we do in life that are simply to fill time and feel busy. By completing busy work, it makes you feel…for a split second…like you have done something, when in reality…all you have done is filled time with meaningless tasks. If there is busy work to be done, outsource what you can to free up time for real production.

Realize You Can Not Change People – There are some people in this world that believe they can change their friends, colleagues and random acquaintances. What they do not realize is that those same people are in the process of trying to change you. By realizing you are not going to change people and who they are…you can focus more on how to be productive within the given circumstances. If you are worrying about how you are going to make someone different, you are wasting your time.

Woosaaa! – Finally, every now and then you need to just step back and take a deep breath. Everything always looks better with a fresh set of eyes and if you find your heart racing and blood pressure boiling…step back for a few minutes so you can get an honest perspective. Nothing is worse than getting into a destructive thinking pattern because you are worrying yourself in circles.

Our lives are filled with wasted time and energy spent on worrying about people, places and events. By cutting out most of that wasted energy and channeling it to more productive activities…we are able to enrich our lives and forgo the early grave. As you go throughout the day, take an honest look at how you fill your mental real estate. Are you worrying about things that do not really matter in the long run? How is that effecting your life? Your health? Your relationships?

What do you do to stop the cycle?

What Do You Do When All Of Your Cards Are On The Table?

It is the bottom of the 9th, 4th quarter and you are all in. You size up the situation around you…look at your competition…read your opponent…dig deep within your gut and make a decision. You make the decision to fold or go for it. This decision is made in a split second based off of facts that are nothing but educated guesses. You go for it…hit it big and enjoy the reward…or you sit back and wonder what could have been. Either way…the decision was yours…you made that decision and now you are the one that has to live with it. Success or failure…it is all on you as you move forward.

What Do You Do When All Of Your Cards Are On The Table?

Pressure does different things to different people. How we react to a given situation varies depending on variables weighed in at the time. Do react differently when the risks are higher? Absolutely! The question is when do you make the decision to hit the risk when everything isn’t on the line.

Many times, we get stuck in a pattern. We hate our jobs but don’t do a damn thing about it. Why? Because it is a steady income stream and you hope and pray that it will get better over time. You put off the risks of today in favor of the sure thing. It is a difficult situation to contemplate as you move forward in life, but what separates the really successful from the routine employee is that willingness to step outside of the box and take that risk.

This risk is not always monetary in nature. Maybe you are stepping out of your comfort zone by really putting yourself out there for the ridicule or praise of others. Maybe you are stepping into a new, unknown field where you will have to learn a new trade all over again. Maybe you are just taking that risk to push for that promotion or raise.

As you look at your business and life decisions, you need to ask yourself a question. How would I approach this situation differently if my life was on the line?

In all reality, our lives are on the line each and every day. We do not know with 100% certainty that we are going to be here tomorrow, so why do we treat all of our decisions like they can just be handled later? As you go through your blogging or business building, are there certain decisions you have put off until tomorrow because you are afraid of the reaction? The result could be life changing, but you put it off out of fear of rejection, losing it all or just the fear of actual work?

If you would handle the situation differently if you suddenly lost your job or got a massive pay cut, then you should probably analyze the current situation and ask, “why not now?”.

Why would you treat the situation differently if all of your cards were on the table and what can you do now to further enhance and better your life through action? Tomorrow is too late and today is the day to start living. Complacency and laziness will keep you trapped. Motivation and the willingness to take calculated risks will catapult you into another world.

Social Responsibilities Of Growing A Blog – Giving Back

The topic of this article really came about through a conversation between Brandon Cox and I during an email string about guest blogging post ideas. When this came up on the list of possibilities…I knew it couldn’t go without being published on RobbSutton.com as I feel this is a vital part of blogging that should not be ignored. Giving back is just as important…if not more so…than success.

There is the old saying…”the more you give…the more you will receive”. As much as that is true in our personal relationships and life interactions, it is even more relevant in the professional world as the more you put out in a positive manner, the more you will receive in return. Over the course of my professional life, I have seen a lot. One of the things that strikes me as odd most often (and I still see it all of the time) is a life cycle that some successful entrepreneurs go through.

They start out with nothing. As a man (or woman) with nothing but an idea, you are willing to give away the farm in pursuit of your dreams. You are willing to help out whoever you can in the hope they will help you grow your business and your dream as well. This giving atmosphere breads drastic change…and as a result…success is achieved for all of the involved parties. Along the road of success, something changes for this entrepreneur. They get greedy. The shift from giving to taking is a drastic one…and now…they are looking for what they can get out of each and every situation over what they can put in. In the beginning, nothing changes. Success still comes and people are still willing to help. As time moves forward, outsiders become aware of what is happening and draw back. The help leaves and the selfish entrepreneur is left to fend for himself. Success dwindles and the ego rises. In the end…failure comes and the entrepreneur can’t figure out why. (you see this in employees as well…usually ends up in being fired)

How Can I Apply This Story To My Blog?

The story is really a simple one. If you stop giving back…you will stop receiving. As bloggers and aspiring entrepreneurs…we have a social responsibility to give back more than we receive. If you want to see sustained success over time, this is a necessary part of your business model you need to take a serious look over. Even your small, just getting started blog is growing due to the spread of your small readership. As things get bigger, word of mouth and the strength of your brand is resting on the shoulders of those that support you.

It is not that you are so incredibly amazing that everyone wants to kiss your ass, it is how you have presented value and giving back over time. When you stop giving back to your readers, they will stop giving back to you in the form of links, spreading the word, commenting on articles, downloading ebooks, buying ebooks, etc. When you step into the selfish nature that comes with a growing ego, you are starting the beginning of your end.

How Can I Continue Giving Back?

As a blogger, you can continue to give back in a multitude of ways. Here are a couple that I keep on tap.

  • Give things away! (ebooks, content, help, etc.)
  • Attend blogging meetups and conferences.
  • Help another blogger get their blog started (remember when someone helped you?)
  • Provide consistent quality content.
  • Never forget you are never bigger than one of your readers.
  • Contests and giveaways that are easy to enter for your readers (good for traffic too).
  • Run charity contests where the proceeds go to a charity of your choice.
  • Linking to other blogs.

See the trend? By paying it forward…you are insuring your success over time.

As you look at your blogging and the business aspect, watch for the trends in your own attitude and lifestyle as you start to see success. Do not overlook the importance of your social responsibility to continue giving back as much as was freely given to you.

Video Podcast: How To Increase Blogging and Life Productivity

Last night, I was talking to Kelly Diels and we got onto the subject of what I have had going on the past year and my plans for 2010. She asked me a question that I hadn’t really thought about seriously…but was doing automatically.

When you are looking at how you spend your time and how you want to grow you blog, there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done when you want to. Time is our only constraint in life…so we have to figure out how to use it efficiently.

When things started shooting towards the stars with my blogging (and I thank those lucky stars every day), I really had to change the way I was living to accomplish my goals. The following video podcast are my thoughts on basic time management and how things changed in my life. It also touches on relationships and how we need to handle them as we grow our blogs.

It’s not too long…just over 5 minutes. This video was shot with my MacBook Pro built-in iSight camera and iMovie ’10. I didn’t use my expensive editing software and cameras (I have a background in post production) to show that you do not need a full out editing suite to video blog effectively.

Word of warning: I look much younger than I am! I hear that comment every time I post a video! Also, this was a quick cut together…one take…just throw it up there. This is me on a Friday morning! I am going to try to get in more of these types of posts…so look for more in the future from RobbSutton.com.

The #1 Killer of Bloggers – Self Doubt

What is the #1 killer of bloggers and their blogs? Is it heart disease? Smoking? Cancer? Car wrecks? No…it is not believing in yourself  and falling prey to self doubt. Self doubt is actually believing you are not capable of achieving your goals, dreams and aspirations. Giving into the feelings of low self worth to the point that you believe the voices in your head telling you that you are not able to do it…people are not going to like it…you should do it like that other guy…why would anyone want to read what I have to say…the stats are not where I want them to be right now…I should just quit…not like I am really losing anything anyway…it is probably better off…it is just too hard…

Your mind wanders. It is a natural part of being human. The problem arises when self doubt starts to take over and you get into a spiral of negative thinking that eventually leads to lack of productivity and eventual surrender. 99% of blogs that do not make it is not because of lack of talent or willingness to succeed. 99% of blogs that fail…fail because they give up too early (typically right before it starts getting really good) and give into the thoughts in their head…the guy down the street…the family member that doesn’t understand.

Overcoming Self Doubt In The Pursuit Of Success

The world is filled with people that will want to bring you down. It will always be easier to be a critic than create…and the critic is always louder than the creator. It is your job to rise above the noise and believe in yourself and your capabilities. No one is going to jump down from the heavens and give you the confidence needed to make it in this world. If you really want to make it big…stop being another statistic…and start writing your own rules in life…you are going to have to find that confidence from within. You are going to have to believe that you are good enough…strong enough…and capable of making your dreams a reality.

If you give in and make your naysayers right…you are the only one that loses. Celebrate your small successes along the road. Every success is another step forward in your pursuit. Fight off the feelings of self doubt by focusing on the positive. Every blogger, entrepreneur and successful life connoisseur started with an idea. They did not start with success…

As you go through the day, think of ways to bring positive light to your achievements. Continue to grow your dreams by focusing on those achievements and lay out the steps for the next. Everyday is not going to be perfect. There are going to be roadblocks along the way, but through believing in yourself and ridding your life of the thoughts that bring you down…you have a fighting chance at hitting your goals and achieving the life you want to live.

All around you…you can see those that give in. They let the world determine their worth. They give into self doubt. That is not going to be you.

Winter Weather Shuts Down Atlanta!

I know it doesn’t look like much for you guys that live with this crap all year long, but Atlanta officially shut down last night due to winter weather. Under all of that pretty white stuff that falls from the sky was a nice thin layer of ice that never seemed to leave today.

We do not get snow and ice very often, but when we do…all milk, canned goods and bread are gone from the grocery store in anticipation of 24 hours of hell! Anyway…I have 4 wheel drive and traction control…so my only real worry are the other idiots out on the road over reacting and running into each other. There were reports all day long of 25 car pileups due to ice. In their defense…we do not really have the man power or equipment to salt and care for our roadways like the crews up north. We just get to play bumper car ice skating and hope the aftermath isn’t too rough.

Over the course of the next couple of days, we get to live in the ice as the temps are not even going to top 20 degrees. So…I’m not riding my bikes this weekend and instead…I’ll be hard at work bringing out more blogging greatness (or so I like to think when my ego is on the left shoulder) and finishing up the redesign/move that took place with mtbtrailreview.com moving to Bike198.com last weekend. More on how to move domains and rebrand in a later article as it is what runs through my head for the month of January.

Hope everyone is having a great start of the year as I had one of my biggest monetary weeks to date! So here is to a fantastic start to 2010! Woot! Oh yeah…and pictures of my truck with white stuff on the ground.

2010 Is YOUR Year

2009 is but a distant memory and 2010 is a 365 day span of a blank canvas waiting to be painted. 2009 came with its own sets of challenges, fears and accomplishments. As one of the most difficult professional years of many people’s lives, we saw a sharp contrast between extreme success and utter failure as we navigated the uncertain economic times. We made it out…we pushed through and we used this frustration to further develop and enhance our own lives. Why? Because other people, places and things are not going to determine our moods and our success.

2010 Is YOUR Year

All of the sweat, tears, long hours and frustration are going to pay off in 2010. All of that work you did while others were complaining is going to add up if it has not already. 2010 is the year we all push forward with our goals to reap the rewards of hard work during a time where others sat back to wait. All of the time you have been putting into your blogs, businesses and stepping that one more step in front of your co-workers or competition is going to see huge rewards in 2010.

We are at the bottomless apex. We are on the verge of greatness. We are ready to continue the push as we have made it out of the wreckage. We are smarter for it and we have no excuses.

Are you going to waste all of the time in 2009 by being lazy in 2010? Do you have your new goals set? Are you ready to attack these next 365 days like they were your last? It is up to you, me and everyone else who fails to concede to the opposition. Are you going to let another individual continue to determine your worth in 2010? Are you going to keep the same complaints and excuses?

Now is the time. The time to get up and make 2010 YOUR YEAR. It is yours to take…and yours to give away…

Blogging, Life and a Chick Flick

Last week, my wife and I picked up a Sony Playstation 3 and a Netflix account to start having Blu-Ray date nights at the house. With the price of actually going out to see a movie making it all but not worth it…it made a lot more since to have the latest gaming system that also happens to play Blu-Ray movies (see how I pulled that one off!).

Besides, I had a bunch of Visa/Mastercard/American Express gift cards to blow, so it seemed like the logical course of action anyway.

What was the first movie on the que for Netflix? Julie and Julia. Besides being a movie that my wife has wanted to see for quite sometime, it also sealed the deal for her when my parents said, “It’s like you guys…just reversed!” Julie and Julia hit the Netflix que, arrived on our doorstep yesterday and made its way to the TV last night with a fire in the fireplace and a lit Christmas tree. The two dogs were ready to curl up, so we hit play and started to watch the flick.

Now…other than being a typical chick flick and a brilliant display of acting from Meryl Streep (you actually forget that you are not watching Julia Child), there are some actual blogging lessons filled within the movie that all bloggers should realize as they continue to grow their audience and success. I was actually pleasantly surprised on some the “blogging lessons” accuracy that was played out during the film. After hearing some bloggers irritated attitudes on how bloggers were displayed in the movie, after actually watching it…I thought it was pretty damn accurate…to a point.

What We Can Learn from Julia and Julia About Blogging

So as I watched this crazy movie, what did I rip out of the movie that are heart felt, meaty, blogging tips for your guys?

  • I Can Blog! – The whole reason Julie starts a blog is because a so-called friend did. The trick…she found something she was passionate about (cooking) and formatted it in a way that people would find interesting (524 Julia Child recipes in 365 days). Now…she didn’t do this intentionally…but it is something you need to consider as you develop your blog topic. And yes…you too can blog…but you actually have to put words on a screen and not procrastinate!
  • Setting Deadlines and Sticking to Them – In the movie, Julia sets the 524 recipes in 365 days as a deadline for herself. Throughout the movie, people tell her that she does not have to stick to the deadlines or she can just lie. In blogging, you are your own boss and you are only accountable to yourself. Deadlines are a great way to make yourself accountable so that you can actually realize your goals. Without deadlines (that used to be determined by your boss…now you are that boss), you are just floating in the wind without any real direction.
  • Writing When No One Is Listening – In the beginning of the movie, Julie gets really excited when she gets her first comment. Of course, that first comment goes something like “I don’t know why you are doing this, it still appears that I am the only one reading this thing. -Mom”. When you start a blog, you have to be prepared to continue writing even when no one is listening. Just because you put your blog out in cyberspace, that does not mean that people are going to gravitate to your words instantly just begging you to keep going. You have to put in the sweat and tears even when there is little to no external reward.
  • Late Nights – Blogging is filled with a ton of late nights in the beginning years. You are just bleeding for extra hours in the day as you continue to write early in the morning or late at night when you can just find 20 extra minutes in the day to put up content without being interrupted by work, family and friends. Julie is up late cooking, writing and doing other blogging activities to get the job done.
  • Flack from Work – Your office or place of employment may have zero clue you have any life online…or even care. For some of you, that might be a real problem as employers do not get “the whole blogging thing”. During my beginning blogging, there was some heat from the powers that be in my office. They are going to assume you are using their company time to do your work or you are skipping out on their work to do yours. They also might be worried that they are going to show up in your online exploits (like her boss was worried about in the movie). Be ready to catch heat from those that do not understand. They are going to make assumptions without asking and you need to be prepared for that conversation should it come up at a future date.
  • Cooperation from Spouse - In the movie, her husband is extremely cooperative (to a point) with the whole project. Julie does step into a narcissistic phase as bloggers sometimes do due to the selfish nature of always talking about yourself or your opinion. The cooperation of your family and…specifically…the one you choose to call your wife or husband…is essential to beginning success in life and in your new business. There is not a single blog on the net that is worth ruining life at home, so you need to make sure you work out the kinks beforehand.
  • Mental Breakdowns – Throughout the movie, Julie goes through several “mental breakdowns” in the search of completing her goals. Blogging can be really stressful at times as you deal with your readers, deadlines and other owning a business stresses. Remember…we have all hit that at some point in time even if it does not appear to be like that on the outside. Keep pushing towards your goal and you will make it there.
  • Dedication to the Cause – The entire movie is based around Julia Child’s life and Julia’s (the blogger) dedication to completing her year long project. While I do not recommend creating a blog that will be dead in 365 days, I do recommend staying dedicated to your cause and continue pushing forward. Both Julie and Julia in the movie were extremely dedicated to their task at hand.
  • Your Industry Might Not Be So Accepting – (spoiler alert) At the end of the movie, Julie finds out that the real Julia Child does not like her…or her blog. While this can be extremely devastating for bloggers, it is a lot more common than you might think. You need to be prepared for the realization that your industry is not too fond of what you are doing online even if you are seeing a massive amount of success. Many people do not understand blogging and think that it is just playing online. They are going to make assumptions about your motives and your dedication. They might even try to put you down or even bring a stop to your achievements. Having a successful blog does not mean that your industry is going to accept you with open arms.
  • Be Yourself – Julie’s blog was successful because of the extreme transparency she used with her life and her writing. When Julia Child wasn’t so accepting of her blog, Julia asked, “Is it because I drop the F-Bomb from time to time?” It is crucially important that your readers are connecting with you and not who you think they want to connect with. You can not fake it…it has to be real.

Being based on two true stories, Julia and Julia is proof of just another way bloggers can make it big online and off. After her article in the New York Times, Julie hit it big through her words and her online blogging. The key is finding something that people can relate to…and then help them and help yourself at the same time. The rest will be history.

Ebooks…Ebooks…Ebooks…

It was a busy writing year for me! With 2009, there was the introduction and publishing of 3 ebooks on RobbSutton.com and 1 ebook on Bike198.com. I made it a goal to get these informational products done this year, and I achieved that goal plus 1. These ebooks have been an integral part of the success of RobbSutton.com over the past year and I have been incredibly happy with the result.

In July, I released the premium eBook, Ramped Reviews, that gives you all the industry secrets…ins and outs…and how to contact companies…so that you can start to get in free review product on your blog. Review product was a HUGE part of Bike198.com as we saw over $100k worth of review product come through the front doors.

Later that month, I also release Ramped Mindset as a free download through the newsletter subscription. Ramped Mindset helps you improve your way of thinking so that you can realize success. It all starts with your mindset and Ramped Mindset kicks that into gear!

The goal of RobbSutton.com is to help other bloggers see the same success I have through blogging, so in October of this year, I released Ramped Blogging…The Ultimate Blogging Guide. Ramped Blogging takes you from step 1 to step 1,000 in the pursuit of having a successful, money making blog that is growing a bigger following by the day. It is also free via the newsletter subscription, so if you haven’t picked up a copy…click here and get it today!

Guest Posting On Other Blogs

I really like connecting with readers on other blogs. It gives you a chance to get your voice heard to a new audience and it is a very rewarding experience to interact with new people. This year, I made it a focus to really hit guest blogging hard with some high quality posts on other bloggers sites. Here are some of the best of 2009.

Interviews from 2009

One of the other things I have really enjoyed throughout 2009 is getting interviewed by other bloggers about blogging and reviewing. Here are my favorite interviews from 2009.

Note: I was also named #30 on IncomeDiary’s Top 50 Most Influential Bloggers of 2009 which was a HUGE surprise and honor to be listed with that group of bloggers.

Go out and get want you want in life and leave the begging and hand holding out to those that want to complain about their spot in the world. The rest of us will enjoy this one and only life that we are going to create for ourselves.

Happy new year and thanks again for the continued support!!
