Video Podcast: How To Increase Blogging and Life Productivity

Last night, I was talking to Kelly Diels and we got onto the subject of what I have had going on the past year and my plans for 2010. She asked me a question that I hadn’t really thought about seriously…but was doing automatically.

When you are looking at how you spend your time and how you want to grow you blog, there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done when you want to. Time is our only constraint in life…so we have to figure out how to use it efficiently.

When things started shooting towards the stars with my blogging (and I thank those lucky stars every day), I really had to change the way I was living to accomplish my goals. The following video podcast are my thoughts on basic time management and how things changed in my life. It also touches on relationships and how we need to handle them as we grow our blogs.

It’s not too long…just over 5 minutes. This video was shot with my MacBook Pro built-in iSight camera and iMovie ’10. I didn’t use my expensive editing software and cameras (I have a background in post production) to show that you do not need a full out editing suite to video blog effectively.

Word of warning: I look much younger than I am! I hear that comment every time I post a video! Also, this was a quick cut together…one take…just throw it up there. This is me on a Friday morning! I am going to try to get in more of these types of posts…so look for more in the future from RobbSutton.com.

Thanks for this Robb. I really needed this right now even though I didn't realise it. I started my blog about 6 weeks ago and have been writing and promoting a lot since that time. I've also been writing guest posts for other blogs as well, while all the time having a regular 9-5 Mon-Fri job. And I thought I was being fairly productive. But it hit me just then when I heard what you said that if I want to take my blog up a level that I need to get more organised and effective with my time. Rather than spending time updating facebook and Twitter and reading everything I can find on my particular niche I need to be writing and developing my site. Thanks again. And have a great weekend!

Ben It is a wall that hits you in the face sometimes. At one point in time...I was reading everything on the net. Now...I read the blogs that I really follow and section that time off to be incredibly efficient. Blogging still is about connecting with readers and other bloggers, the key is balancing that time. Keep it up!

I'm not even going to say it...but you were right with that warning:) I watched this today while feeding my 10 year old breakfast before school, and unloading the dishwasher at the same time. I'm not a multitasker in general. I prefer doing one thing at a time, but you are absolutely right about the time management thing. And, also about the giant time suck the internet can be. Oh boy, I am guilty of that! The video actually turned out great even without fancy editing. Nice to know I can do that with my web cam.

I get it ALL the time Debbie. I guess the camera takes 10 years off of me! I think everyone is guilty of the time suck (I still get into it from time to time)...being aware of it is the first step in making things more efficient. Sometimes simpler is better!

Already in 2010, I've started to get a lot busier. I have a lot of different things going on related to the blog, so I've started looking at things that I can cut out. I cut out most TV and things like that a while ago. What's helped me is unsubscribing to a lot of non-coffee blogs. I was reading a ton of how to blogs, I felt like I had to read every blog post. this year I kind of feel like I need to spend more time taking action and less time learning about how I should take action. Now, I'm still subscribed to a few too many, but I'm cutting the list down to just a few blogs in that niche.

Thanks for your thoughts on this Robb. It's a great subject and I have to constantly remind myself to ask the question, "Is this somehow growing my revenue?" If I can't answer that solidly, it means I'm headed down the wrong road. I also found that spending just a few minutes planning tomorrow's schedule before I go to bed - by actually putting the tasks into time on my calendar - it goes a long way in helping me stay on track.

Rob, Thanks for sharing this. Just as I've been going over this I've implemented the concept of using a stop watch for each tasks and putting time limits on each thing I do to se if I can pick up my efficiency. One thing I've also decided to do is not get a television at my new apartment because I feel that it will be a time suck.

Told you! I don't know why I have that problem but I do...guess it will work out for the better later in life.
