12 Weeks: Time To Let The World In On Our Secret

The 12 week appointment marks a pivotal point in a pregnancy…time to let the world in on your little secret.

This morning we headed into our 12 week appointment to find out that everything is going great. The heartbeat is still strong at 175 bpm, it was very easy to find and my wife is incredibly healthy. That was perfect news for us as we prepare to go to the more complicated 3D ultrasound later this week to measure the spine and do several other checks.

With everything in line, it is time to announce we are pregnant!

Everyone has their own way of doing things. Thanks to social media (aka. Facebook), we are able to let the world know like never before. After letting family know, I knew I wanted to do something a little bit different to let the cat out of the bag…so I made this video.

Now that the first trimester is ending…it is time to really get excited! (and start preparing)

Love the video! Wish I had thought to do something like that! :) Once again, congrats, and enjoy your sleep while you can. Oh, and those 3D ultrasounds are really cool if the baby cooperates. We had a high risk pregnancy so we had one of those every few weeks to keep tabs on the baby - but it was amazing to see our little boy before he was even born!

Hi Robb, Congratz Robb as it seems like your wife and you have had a very rough journey. I guess it's true good things come to those who wait. We've talked through e-mail in the past and I want to say thanks for creating this blog as it may help to answer a lot of questions I'm asking myself about possibly becoming a dad one day. My wife and I aren't having a baby yet, but that is the subject of this comment. My wife and I have been together for over 10 years and when we were dating all the way up to getting married and now we never even thought of having kids. It never even popped in my mind or her's and really it's something we should have talked about. The problem is she wants kids and well, I don't think I do. Nothing wrong with people who do as I'm sure it's a blessing, but I've never had any feelings toward having kids. I'm very logical and personally I just have never been able to see having kids especially when we are not financial set. I tend to look at the numbers and the pros and cons. My wife of course thinks it's the ultimate form of love and I'm sure she does believe that and I'm sure that's true for most people, but for me the ultimate love was for her to marry me. It's been causing a lot of problems lately because she wants them and I'm leaning to not having them. I believe you marry the person because you love them and it's not all about having kids, but my wife just can't see living a life without a kid now. Very tough decisions ahead. I am willing to keep the idea of having a kid with her open as I do love her and want her to be happy, but still it has been a very tough and trying road for us lately. I thought I was odd or strange for not waiting kids and not having any feelings toward them, but after a lot of research I found out this is pretty common with women and men. I think the lifestyle is called Child Free or something to that effect. That made me feel a lot better, but still I'm under a lot of stress to figure out if I want kids and if I don't will our marry last. Everyone I talk to says something will change in me during the process, but my fear is that if I have a child with my wife that it's possible my feelings may not change. So it's quite scary. I've been doing tons of research trying to weight the pros and cons of having a child and a blog like this is very helpful for me while I'm going through the process. It let's me see insights of someone who isn't a dad and what it's like to go through everything leading up to the birth and before hand. Sorry for the long back story Robb, but I just wanted to share this and also ask if you ever went through the feeling of not waiting kids earlier in your relationship? If so, did something change? In your opinion what are the pros to having a kid. Do you think a couple should wait if they aren't financially set? I'm just trying to get as many different opinions on the subject as possible. Sorry Robb, As you can tell I'm just very confused. Either way, congratz and I wish the two of you the best. Hopefully your blog will continue to help me find answers I'm seeking for too.

I have a friend of mine that just went through the exact same thing you are. They ended up having a boy a couple of weeks ago and his opinion about everything changed that instant. For a guy, it is much different than a woman. We are not built with the instinct to have children. Many times, guys won't even like kids or want them until they hold there own. What you are going through is completely normal and I would just suggest being as open and honest as you possibly can. Your feelings on the subject are much like many other guys in the same situation. From what I have seen with friends and family...your logical perception (my friend is an engineer to give you reference) has the strong possibility of changing when it is yours and not just a concept or another kid. Not having gone through the whole process yet, I can only comment from what I have seen. I went to lunch with him the other day and literally the only words he could come up with to describe what has happened is "now I get it."

I think the video is a great way to celebrate the announcement of "your" pregnacy. Everyone looks so happy, even the dogs seem really excited. And this blog is a great way to document your journey to fatherhood. And I finally caught up on the post about the baby gift so you don't need to respond to my question. All the best to all of you!
