Blogging. Fatherhood. Business Building. It's all here.

Blog Prioritizing – Effectively Planning Your Blogging Time

Blogging is no different than any other successful business venture…you need to have an organized plan of attack if you want to make it big. The reality is that you can not do everything at once and you only have so much time during the day to get the necessary blogging tasks complete and published.

Many times, you are in the process of working a 9-5 while you are trying to build up your internet empire, so time is of the essence as you continually use your free time to build your blog and pump out your quality content.

If you are anything like me…you have hundreds of fantastic ideas all circling around your head just waiting to take the world by storm. However, half the time you forget the idea from yesterday in your quest for internet greatness, so you continually kick yourself as you try to remember that next great article idea that is going to set you over the top. Add to that…blogging has its own set of “must do’s” as you have to reply to comments on your blog, prepare guest posts on other blogs, comment on other blogs, work on your design, market your blog, work on new ideas and promotions…feel it all starting to add up? Looking for more time in the day as you try to build something you can call your own? Try not to stress…you answer is prioritizing your time and it can be done pretty easily.

Blogging Has A Lot Of Time Soaking Activities

Time is the only thing in your life that you can not control. There are only 24 hours in a day and a lot of those hours are already called for as you continue your pursuit of the internet lifestyle (where you get more of those hours to do what you want!). As you continue to grow your blog and put out quality content that readers are going to soak up like cold lemonade on a hot summer day…you need to use your time wisely and get rid of wasteful activities that only hurt your cause…not help.

Blogging has its own set of tasks that have to be completed.

  • Content production
  • Content brainstorming
  • Design modification or generation
  • Comment and email reply
  • Marketing
  • Commenting on other blogs
  • Submitting guest posts on other blogs
  • Research
  • Off site content (ebooks, tutorials, etc.)
  • etc…etc…etc…

Each of these tasks have different priorities for different bloggers. Where beginning bloggers need to spend 99% of their time creating quality content and brainstorming new ideas, a seasoned blogger might drop that to 75 or 60% as they look for new and inventive ways to get their established blog to a new pair of eyes. As you can already see, the precious moments that you have to work on your growing blog can be few and far between when you add family, another job or just relaxing to take a deep breath into the mix.

How To Prioritize Your Blogging Time

Prioritizing your blogging time is an activity that is going to be crucial to your blogging career as time goes on. Your priorities might change with time, but the fact that you need to organize that time will always be there. As mentioned before, your priorities as a beginning blogger might (and probably are) drastically different than an established blogger that is already an expert/leader in their respective niche.

You need to take each of your blogging activities and assign an importance to them in a list. For beginning bloggers and still most successful bloggers, the #1 priority is continuing to deliver quality content. Since this is your #1 priority, delivering this quality content should get the most time during your blogging. Then, you need to rank other activities in line. For beginning bloggers, your next activities can include submitting guest posts, working on an ebook or commenting on other larger blogger’s blogs. For the experienced blogger, these tasks might include answering emails, responding to comments left on your blog or researching ways to increase your spread on the internet.

By having this list of blog priorities, you are able to better organize your blogging time by attacking each task in order of importance. Without this organization, you can find yourself wasting a lot of time moving from activity to activity with no real direction. This creates a lot of wasted time that you can never get back. When time is your enemy…this can prove to be very detrimental to your progress.

Set Aside Blogging Time

Since you already have your list that you update as time goes on…you know exactly how you need to attack your blogging time, but…you also need to schedule that time throughout your day. For a lot bloggers, you might only have time at night or early in the morning to produce content and market your blog. You need to create a schedule and stick to that schedule. I know…for me..if I set aside 2 hours (ex. between the hours of 7-9pm) for blogging, I am a lot more efficient with that 2 hours than I am if I just have all day to mess around with things. By keeping to a schedule, you will be able to get a lot more accomplished during a shorter period of time because that time will not be wasted.

It Is Not Easy

One of the hardest tasks that beginning entrepreneurs have with building a business is being their own boss. You no longer have anyone standing over you telling you what to do and when to do it. You have to set that for yourself and have the discipline to stick with it…even if you don’t want to. As you start to prioritize your blogging activities and stick to a schedule, you are becoming your own blogging boss by managing your time and productivity effectively. That is the key to being successful as you continue to be a better manager and boss of yourself.

The Ability to Kick Your Own Ass

What separates a successful business owner or blogger from the failing wannabe? Is it one great idea? Is it luck that just seems to fall on the successful? Is it a load of cash that is backing their mediocre idea?

No…it is not. None of those things create a successful business owner or blogger. They might allow you to fake success for a longer period of time, but…in the end…you will see the same result without one key element. Successful business owners have a unique ability within themselves to kick their own ass.

Why do I want to kick my own ass?

I know…it sounds funny on the surface. Why would I want to the ability to kick my own ass? While the phrase in and of itself is misleading and humorous, the premise behind it is solid and breeds success time and time again. To be successful, you have to be able to force yourself to do things you might not want to, get back on the horse and learn from your failure and fight of the inherent laziness that we find in ourselves to get actual, productive work done.

The easy road is to continue complaining about your job, life and circumstances. The hard part is giving yourself a kick in the ass to change your life and do something about your circumstances to become a do’er and not a victim. You then need the ability to continue kicking your own ass to push forward through diversity and never give up on your goals. If you are unwilling to reach around and push yourself forward, then you will never see success because you will always be the one that stands in your way. It will not be the boss that is not giving you a raise, it won’t be Suzie down the hall that just won’t shut her mouth, it is not the customer that just won’t do what they said they were going to…it will be you and you will be pushing forward despite all of those things that want to hold you back. You will be able to continue pushing forward and being productive because of your unique ability to kick your own ass and do it.

The question is…how many rounds are you will to go with yourself?

Blogging Needs More Heros and Success Stories

What fills up a stadium full of fans? The love of the game? No…the fans pour into stadiums, tune in on tv and read articles on the internet with the hope they can be apart of greatness. How many times did you grandfather tell you about perfect game when you were a kid? How many times has your father told you about his friend that overcame a huge obstacle in life to achieve success? When Lance Armstrong takes his first pedal stroke in the Tour de France, viewers come out in record numbers to watch and cheer hoping for another come from the back victory. Underdogs in playoffs around the world are cheered on as they go after the impossible defying all odds. When cancer patients push through the pain and beat the disease…we cry with happiness and bring motivation to the next fighter. What is the common theme amongst all great things in this world…a hero.

What is a hero?

A hero is not a perfect human being that has achieved greatness with ease. A hero is a person who has overcome adversity to achieve new heights of success that touch us to the core. They arouse feelings of joy and pain as we watch these super humans pull up towards the front…defying all odds. Perfection is boring. In life, we want to see people pull themselves from the wreckage to achieve greatness. It is this imperfection that draws us closer to these individuals as we can relate where they came from and how they live. Through struggle and persistence, these hero’s showed us that a regular person can still make it in life. A regular person can fight and bring about change by pushing forward. Hero’s show us that it can still be done no matter what the world says. Hero’s tell a story and give us hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Why does blogging need more hero’s?

Becoming a blogging hero - Blogging Success - Tell a story

Truly successful bloggers have a heroic story to tell. When you look at the Jeremy Schoemaker’s, Darren Rowse’s, John Chow’s and Zac Johnson’s, you see stories that end in success. These bloggers did not start off successful. They built themselves up from real issues in their own lives that range from large debt, getting fired from jobs and even health issues. The reason they are successful and touch the lives of so many is because of their success story. Their pull from the wreckage, defying all odds story touches the lives of their readers as they continue to climb the ladder. Readers are able to engage and relate to these bloggers on a very personal level.

The successful bloggers are not just another copycat. They are originals with original stories. As others try to imitate their success…they fail because they lack the foundation of a personal story behind their blog. Blogging needs more hero’s to jump up from the wreckage and achieve greatness. With more and more eager bloggers all looking to make their next easy fortune with their words, the blogging world is getting saturated with boring crap that is not a story…it is purely just an attempt at income.

When you start looking at your blog from an objective level, are you telling your story? Many times…we leave out the most personal aspects in our lives and replace them with boring attempts at income production. The transparency in life and your personal involvement with your readers is what is going to grow your blog to record levels. By bringing your story to your blog, you can become the hero in your niche. Where others falter, you will succeed by connecting with your readers on a deep level that can only be achieved by sharing your failures as much as your successes.

There is and always will be bland blogs that are void of feeling and personality. It is your job, as a real blogger, to bring that emotion back to the web. When you write your blog posts, they need to be an extension of who you are as you continue to pump out content related to your niche. Use the transparency in your life to connect with your readers. Even those who do not share the same feelings and experiences as you do…will respect where you have come from and where you are going. Fight the urge to create an anonymous, lifeless blog by stepping out and being vulnerable. By stepping out and sharing your life and experiences with others…you are able to create your own heroic story through your blogging.

Everyone has a story to tell…what is yours?

Saturated Niche: Can you still be successful?

As much as we would all like to fall into a niche that is uninhabited, with an extremely large audience and hugely profitable…that no longer exists. With thousands of new blogs starting up every day, each niche is becoming more and more crowded as everyone competes for readers and that elusive top spot where they can be the expert. When you are at the top of your game, the sky is the limit as you continue to breed success and enjoy the fruits of all of that hard work you have put in over time. With all of these thousands of pages on the internet, can you still be successful in an overly crowded niche?

How to have a successful blog in a crowded niche

Yes…it is possible, but there are certain things you are going to have to do differently if you want to be successful in a crowded niche. If you plan on blogging just like everyone else on your block, you are going to get frustrated as the readers just never seem to stay in your little corner of the web. So…lets run through it.

Sub Divide the Niche

I am sure you have heard some version of this before if you have done any research into blogging. If you are starting a blog in a overly populated niche, it is often times better to subdivide that niche into a smaller section that you can call your own. The competition for this specialty is going to be lower, and you can also expand in the future as you continue to grow your brand and your traffic.

Are you looking into stepping into the electronics/computer niche but don’t know where to start? Start to look at your strengths as they sit right now and capitalize on those as you start your blog. Do you know one section of the market better than the others? Start a blog that reviews and discusses just laptops, accessories or tutorials on how to use your laptop so efficiently that you will never need a desktop ever again. As you can see by this example, you are able to provide quality content to a select group that will grow a following. If you tried to start out with an extremely broad topic like computers, you are going to be competing with very well established blogs, so start in a smaller subdivision of the niche and grow with time.

Be Unique and Different

Are all of the blogs in your particular niche cookie cutter examples that could use to be stirred up a little bit? By being unique and finding your own voice in your blogging, you can find success where others have not by simply being different. There are blogs out there that have built their entire brand around their unique personality and the way they deliver their content. If you really want to start a blog in a saturated niche and be successful, you need to bring as much of yourself and your uniqueness into your blogging as you continue to try to grow a readership.

You never know, readers in that particular niche could be bleeding for someone new and exciting to step up and take the reigns.

Do It Better Than The Competition

Everyday, we see companies in the retail market step up and do something so much better than their competition that they blow everyone away. They studied their competition, realized their weaknesses and provided their strengths to the market. The massive success they see with their product is because they answered the needs of a market that was not getting serviced.

As you look at your potential blogging niche, what are the other guys not doing? Certain industries get stuck in the same routine and rarely look at how they could do things better because they are happy with their current situation. Often times, they are too large and bloated to make sweeping changes, so the way it was done yesterday is the way it is done today. If you come in with a better plan, better content and the ability to adapt and change to your environment, you will have a let up on your competition with the ability to do it one step better.

Just because there are a lot of blogs in your niche…does not not mean they are good. Step up and provide your audience with quality that they have not experienced. That will set you apart from the guys that are just going through the motions.

Yes: You can see success blogging in a saturated niche.

As you can see…you can be highly successful with your blog in a saturated niche. It just takes a little bit more analyzing to figure out what is going to work for you and your blog as you start the ultimate quest to becoming the expert in your field. You are going to get a lot of resistance from others who think it can’t be done, but I am here to tell you it can be successful if done correctly.

Quantity is not quality…and quality wins out in the end…

The Key To Success and How To Be Successful

What is it that successful people know that you don’t? What makes it so that they can realize success and prosperity over and over again while you are just struggling to tread water in this unsure world?

There has to be some secret, something you don’t know, something that would break you into the life that you always dreamed of if you could just figure it out. If you could only tap into that greatness that those successful people found, then you too could walk out of the wreckage and grab the dreams that you have always had just one step out of reach.

The Key To Success

So what is this key to success that will catapult you forward? Today is your lucky day because I am going to reveal the secret to success so that you too can live the life that used to be only a dream. The key to being successful in life and in business is really two fold. Each of these aspects are mutually exclusive and require each other to realize positive results. There are people in this world that try to achieve new heights by only implementing one of these fantastic ideas, but they end up failing and fall into complacity with their lives as they stand that moment. To truly be successful…you need two very important traits…

  1. You must have the willingness to take calculated risk.
  2. You must never give up.

Sounds simple doesn’t it? If it is so simple…then why isn’t everyone successful? Let’s break it down a little bit further in our quest to live a better life.

The Willingness To Take Calculated Risk

At the start of every successful marriage, there was one thing that had to take place. One person in the relationship (normally the man) had to take the risk and ask…”will you marry me?” Now…hopefully he had a pretty good idea of what they answer would end up being before he asked, but it was still a calculated risk that he had to take in the pursuit of a happy family life.

We take calculated risks on a daily basis without even realizing it. Most of the time, the risk is relatively low as it has become a part of our daily routine. You take  a risk every time you get behind the wheel, eat fast food or even walk across the street. To be successful, you have to apply these same types of situations to your business decisions. Are you willing to invest money to see a large return? Are you will to start a business during a recession? Are you going to act on that idea that you have been holding onto for years? All of these are questions that require an action that is based upon an associated risk that returns a reward. Often times, the decisions that carry the largest amount of risk reap the largest rewards.

So why don’t more people take risks in their professional life? Fear. The fear of rejection, failure or losing the little bit they already have keeps individuals, like yourself, from stepping out and taking calculated risks. We find ourselves coming up with excuses for our current position in life stating it could always be worse. That statement is not false, but it also keeps us from achieving greatness by being content where we stand. When was the last time you took any risk?

You Can Never Give Up

99% of the time, people give up right before they achieve their goal. In business and in life, there are going to be barriers to your success. There are going to be people that don’t understand. There are going to be friends that down deep do not want you to succeed and they will put down your efforts in an attempt to keep the status quo. You are going to fail along the road to success more times than you succeed.

The Key to Success - Never Give UpBy learning from your mistakes, ignoring your negative influences and pushing forward, you can achieve your goals. Far too often, we let outside influences directly affect our actions instead of motivating us to work harder. Successful people learn on a daily basis and apply that knowledge to their next adventure. As you look towards the future, remember to never give up in your pursuits because you are the only one that can stand in your way. Your mind will play tricks on you as you start to believe others that are telling you it can’t be done. Just imagine if Thomas Edison gave up before that final attempt that brought light to the world. Truly successful people use their failures as motivation to do it better next time…not to quit…

As you go through life…

…analyzing your next move. Take a close look at past decisions and learn from those outcomes. What could you have done differently that would have yielded a different result? Did you need to take a little bit more risk? Did you give up right before you were about to make it? Use that new knowledge and apply it to the future. You never know…your next successful act could just be the one that makes it…

NoXQses – A vanity plate to live by

Have you ever just been going about your day when you see something that just slams you in the face? It is almost like the stars aligned and this moment was made just for you. At first glance, it is absolutely obvious that this was exactly the message that you needed to see that day. I had one of those moments that I have to pass along.

Yesterday afternoon, my wife and I were driving to her company party when I saw the only vanity license plate I have ever liked. Gracing the back of a beautiful Ferrari F360 Modena Spider (in Ferrari red) was a license plate that read “NoXQses”. After seeing this car and plate combo, I could only imagine one source for the phrase’s meaning on this particular Ferrari. More than likely, this man had built himself up from nothing and has now found success through hard work and determination. This was a big assumption on my part, but its my imagination…so I’ll run with it! From a first hand point of view, he can see no excuse for going after what you want and creating a life that you can be proud of.

Everyday, you come across people that ALWAYS have an excuse for their place in life. These people often express their lack of “luck” in normal conversation. These phrases normally start with…

I would love to do that but…

I just can’t afford anything like that because…

I won’t be happy until…

I never get a break…

I wish I had that kind of luck…

What these people do not realize is that they are conditioning themselves to stay exactly where they are in life…or worse! Now…not everyone’s idea of the ideal life is jetting down the street in a Ferrari. Every person has a an image in their head of what they consider to be the perfect life in their eyes. For some, it might be working a job they love that covers the bills (and a little more), but it affords them the time off to spend with their family. Their neighbor might be starting his own business with the hope…that one day…he will be the king of a huge empire that he as built all by himself. Down the street, there might be a woman that wants to be able to help others by organizing charity events. What surprises me is that most people will come up with an excuse that explains why they can’t have that life instead of trying to take the steps necessary to realize their dream.

I am 100% convinced that the only thing that stands between you and your dreams…is YOU. If you want something bad enough, you can work hard, learn from your mistakes and adapt that knowledge to reach your goals. Where most people fall short…is working hard. It is much easier to be complacent and find an excuse than it is to shut up and work at it. I have seen many people in the working world that would rather spend 4 hours finding someone else to blame when doing the job correctly might only take an hour. The same theory applies here. If you really want something…no one is going to walk up to you tomorrow and just hand it over. It is up to you. You completely control your destiny.

Are you going to search out the successful life that you desire, or are you going to find another excuse why it will never happen to you? It is completely up to you…

Are you setting yourself up for success or failure?

This is a question that you need to ask yourself before you start any project or task. Often times, we determine the outcomes of our actions far before we even take that first step the end goal. Our thoughts and conclusions that we draw in the beginning stages create a mindset that carries through the entire project. You can literally determine your success or failure with any given goal before you have even started, purely because of how you think the resulting outcome will pan out.

How does this work?

When you start new projects, sites, personal goals or new life journeys with a negative attitude and the predisposition that you are going to fail, this attitude and negative thought process will guide the decisions you make and ultimately give you the goal that you already had set in your head. Have you ever had things in life where you said, “That will never work.” Sure enough…some time down the road, it didn’t work and you proved to yourself that your beginning conclusions were correct. Do you think that the outcome may have been different if you had a more positive outlook towards the end result?
