4 Tips To Insure Your Success In 2011 and Beyond

With 2010 behind us and 2011 up and running, everyone is looking to improve this year over last. For many of you, you might be looking to make 2011 your breakout year as you take your dream and make it a reality. It is possible, you just have to keep you mindset on the right path to success and that makes the sky the limit for what you can accomplish over the next 12 months.

#1 – This Is Not A Backup Plan

Your future is too important to treat your business as a backup plan. I hear far too many bloggers and small online business owners say, “It makes me some side cash and hopefully…one day…it will be full time.” One day never comes with that attitude…it will always be side income instead of your profession.

Owning your own business (online or not) is dependent on a correct mindset from the very beginning. Do I believe in working a 9-5 until you can replace the income with your blogging? Absolutely. I even suggest working both if you can pull it for as long as you can balance the needs of your lifestyle (before you have kids, etc.), but if you expect to make it big with the mindset of small…you are sorely mistaken. You have to jump into your life headfirst as if there was no other option. You want to be full-time with your dream and that is the goal from day one. Will it provide side income in the meantime? Yes it will, but you will spend the side income on stuff you don’t need with a bad business mindset instead of putting it where it belongs…back into your business for growth.

Start 2011 with the mindset that you are going to make it big in 2011. It is not if or hopefully…it is when and that is dependent upon you.

#2 – Form Efficient Working Habits

We waste a TON of time. It’s true. Even those of us that think we are incredibly efficient still waste a lot of time.

In 2011, you need to figure out how you can efficiently work to get the most out of every minute you are in front of that computer or networking. I personally use tools like Evernote, Google Calendars and scheduling posts to make sure I am running at full steam at all times. Just recently, I used my need for efficiency as an excuse with my wife to pick up an iPad. While my intentions were to just get an iPad, I actually found that my efficiency level increased during meetings and on the go as I had a way to get ideas down on paper easier and a way to edit plans/invoices and other documents during crucial meetings.

My efficient working habits are not going to be the same as yours in most cases but you need to find out how you can make the most out of the time you have. There are going to be things that come up to derail your plans, so having everything in place and planned will be crucial to your success in 2011.

#3 – Watch The Trends

If someone would have told you to ignore Digg 3 years ago, would you believe them? What if they told you Facebook was going to be more powerful than Google 2 years ago?

The web is still finding its way. Its users are still figuring out how they want to share and find information online. Ironically, 2010 marked the year of consumers (yes…your content is a consumable) going back to their roots of personally recommending products, services and other items through social media outlets like Facebook. How many people looking to buy a vacuum cleaner online hit up Facebook first to ask their friends what they are using before they searched Google? Online word of mouth is building up steam quickly, so capitalizing on that trend can bring you some serious growth by not wasting time on old, tired out methods.

However, just because it is the trend that is working today…that does not necessarily mean it will the the trend of tomorrow. It is up to you to watch out for the next Facebook or Twitter. Will there be another flood of social media like those two created? Probably not…but what if the next flood is something that is branded outside of social media?

In 2011, you need to watch the trends and test theories to see what works for your audience and your business. You never know…you could find a secret goldmine.

#4 – Stay Positive And Have Fun

2010 in many ways was the year of negativity and polarizing opinions. Personally, I stopped watching the news as it was just depressing. At the end of the day, we are all dealt the same hand of cards. It is up to us to make the most we can of this one life we have, and if we are going to live it miserable and negative…there isn’t much point.

Your success this year will completely depend on your outlook on life. Are there things going on in this world that you don’t agree with? Yes. Are there people in your life that just get on your nerves? Yes. Is that going to change? No…but you can change how you interact and look at the world. By staying positive and having fun with your life, you will attract other positive people and things. If you make the conscious decision to be negative and angry, you are going to attract nothing but negative and angry people or things.

If you only do one thing that will help your business this year…it should be to have fun with it. The rest will fall in line naturally.

Fear Paralysis: Stopping Progress Over The Fear Of The Unknown

Fear can be a great motivator.

However, in most cases it causes its unsuspecting victims to fall short of their goals due to fear paralysis that brings all forward progress to a screeching halt. Many times, the victim if fear paralysis does not even know they are a victim as they waste time on meaningless tasks and always find that one more reason not to move forward at this point in time.

There is a lot of talk about using fear to motivate progress and how you shouldn’t be afraid of failure. We learn from failure and every successful entrepreneur, blogger or internet marketer will tell you they have failed far more times than they have succeeded. This is a known fact that we have all come to accept and we look forward to the day when you can bestow that knowledge unto others. But what can be even more crippling to entrepreneurs around the world?

The Fear Of Success

In my experience, the fear of success can sometimes be far more crippling than the fear of failure. When you fail, you are typically only affecting yourself. While the after affects can affect those around you (lost income for the family, more time investment, etc.), when you fail it is just another part of life. You have been preparing yourself for it since day one and it has been beat into your head that it will happen. So you pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and run at it again with the new knowledge and experience to hopefully make your idea a success the second time around.

What happens if you actually succeed?

What happens if your idea is as good as you thought it would be? Now you are accountable to that idea and the process of keeping it going. You have attached your name to a product, service or idea that now has grown a life of its own. In success, comes responsibility and that fear of being accountable to other people, places and things can keep aspiring entrepreneurs from taking that last step into launch mode.

In my life, the unrealistic fears of success have been the greatest hurdles to cross. We expect to fail in our lives. It is the illustrious hanging fruit of success that is the goal and can be more stressful than failure.

So what do we do when we are scared of success?

  • We hold off launches until they are perfect (which does not exist).
  • We tell ourselves that we are just going to fail anyway so it is not important.
  • We worry about the time management.
  • We try to convince ourselves that greatness is ok not to achieve.

Have you ever tweaked a website to death only to find out that all of your “great ideas” that took weeks or months to complete are worthless once readers hit your site? What about that eBook idea that you have been sitting on for months? Have you even taken the first steps towards that great idea that could get you to where you want to be monetarily? There is no “perfect time” or fully complete project. There are those that are launched and those that aren’t.

The fear of success goes hand in hand with the fear of commitment, responsibility and accountability. To be a success, you have to embrace the idea that you are worth the positive outcomes and you can handle the responsibility that comes with that success. You have to beat down the roadblocks that are keeping you from achieving your goals. Success is stressful…but it is a great problem to have.

If You Can Achieve Something Without Struggle…

As you probably know already, I am obsessed with all things cycling (that’s why I started Bike198.com). Cyclists…specifically pro road bikers…are known for overcoming struggles to achieve goals. With the epic stories of Lance Armstrong to come back victories of Greg LeMond and others, we can draw inspiration and motivation in our own lives from watching athletes perform above expectations in races and events like the Tour de France.

The following quote from Greg LeMond summarizes a very key point in my life that I felt warranted further explanation.

I have always struggled to achieve excellence. One thing that cycling has taught me is that if you can achieve something without a struggle it’s not going to be satisfying.

-Greg LeMond-

What a killer quote. If you sit back and think about it for a second, it really starts to sink in and make sense. The story of the “free lunch gone bad” is one that goes down in history over and over again. Why do you think most lottery winners are worse off 5 years down the road than before they received their pile of cash?! When you are given something without the blood, sweat and tears that goes into the acquisition…you do hold hold the same perceived value with the feeling of accomplishment that goes with that achievement. Therefore…the easy come, easy go mentality sets in and you tend to not protect your asset as much as if you had worked your ass off for it.

Blogging And The Ultimate Grind

Truly successful blogs and businesses are not overnight successes. Yes…we hear the results of successful businesses online, but we very rarely hear the massive effort put forth on the back end and during the beginning stages to get there.

Whenever someone starts up a new blog and asks how to make it big…they look at the success of others and attempt to replicate it. However, 99% of those beginning bloggers are not willing to put in the effort when no one is reading. They are not willing to put in the late nights, the practice and patience of learning the craft or the dedication to treating this medium as a business. Instead…they want to see their little corner of the web explode income without putting in the work because the Internet…as a whole…is still perceived to be an “easy money” outlet when that could not be farther from the truth.

Blogging is not the easiest way to make money online.

Blogging is a grind. Day in and day out writing, promotion and innovation bring success over time. The reason you see such solid businesses built up around the online medium of blogs is because that asset is protected strongly by its creator due to the amount of effort it took to gain success. Do you think bloggers would protect their online real-estate as closely if it was just handed to them? Probably not.

The struggle in blogging is the reason for the payoff at the end of the rainbow. It is the reason we grind away at creating and promoting content. It feeds the love of connecting with other people around the world that share the same passion as you do. It is the story behind the success that in turn breeds more success.

If you are expecting to achieve your dreams through blogging without the grind and struggle…you are wasting your time. If you are ready to grow past your expectations and wildest dreams through hard work and improvement by learning through failures…you are at the right place.

It is a long road, but the journey defines the commitment and success over time.

Dreams Are Made Reality One Step At A Time

Everyone has a dream. For those of us in the online world…it is to see our little corner of the web grow. For others around the world, it might be professional achievement in corporate, a healthy set of two kids or even that car they drooled over as a kid. Each of these dreams are achievable, but many people run throughout life talking about their dreams only to find out later they were just words hitting air. Time goes on…things come up…and somewhere down the road…action was not taken. Every day of the week you can walk down the street and hear people talking about their dreams and what they want to accomplish, so what separates those that achieve their goals from those who just pay them lip service over time? Is there a secret? Is there something you can do today to change the outcomes of tomorrow?

Dream Lock: The Action Of Doing Nothing

It does not matter what your dream is. It can be a personal goal or a professional achievement. If you focus on the dream solely hoping that one day it will come true, you are going to be constantly waiting. I like to think of this as dream lock. The dreamer has an idea of where they want to head, but by focusing on the last step 24 hours a day, 7 days a week…they forget that there are steps 1 through 285 that need to be carried out before the dream can be realized.

By focusing on the dream and not how to get there…the dream becomes another “I wish I could have” in the life of the dreamer. Why does this happen? It’s simple. It is a lot more fun to talk about the dream ahead than it is to sit in reality about the boring steps it takes to get there. Instant gratification of the thought of a dream can often times be more satisfying to the human psyche than the accomplishment of a small task that adds up to that dream.

Dreams Are Made Reality One Step At A Time

Like most things in life, it is the small steps that matter. The small steps add up over time to bring you to the big reward. When you have a dream, it is important to have that focus to know where you want to end up down the road, but…during that process…the focus on step 1 and then step 2 and then step 3. By focusing on each step and checking them off the list, each step will add up to your dream.

Set the goal but focus on the steps.

By following that simple theory and keeping your focus on action, your dreams become a reality before you know it.

Too Much Future Thinking Is Overwhelming

Right now, my wife and I are going through some issues at home that are hard to deal with. Starting a family is proving to be a little bit more involved than we had hoped for, so there are certain things we are having to do that are outside of the normal way to do things. If we continue to sit back and wonder “what if” or just focus on the end result instead of the action we need to take to get there, we will end up overwhelming ourselves and getting into a situation where we freeze.

This theory of taking it one step at a time holds even more true for toughest situations in our lives. To truly be successful or tackle elements out of our control, we have to focus on each step and not lockup. It’s hard, but no one promised that life would be easy. Who we are is defined by the actions we take and by choosing inaction…you are making the conscious decision to be just another number. By choosing action…you are making the decision to be extraordinary.

Our success as human beings in life is the addition of small steps taken over time. Which step forward are you taking today?

Personal Experience: Overcoming Life's Closed Roads

Over the course of everyone’s life, we come against closed roads. Somewhere in our carefully laid out plan, something goes wrong and throws a wrench in our entire system. These events can be everything from self inflicted disasters to health problems completely out of our control. Regardless, they derail our once steady track and throw us into a state of disbelief and confusion. The strong overcome these obstacles and find a detour in their path while the weak freeze and let the closed road control their path in life. In my life, I had to find a wide detour…and here is some of the story for inspiration in your own life…

Life Under The Arches

I graduated from the University of Georgia. For those that do not already know, the historic arches on the outer edge of North Campus in between the campus and downtown are historic. With all of that history aside, undergrads at UGA are not supposed to walk under the arches until they graduate. If they do, they are cursed to never graduate and fail out miserably, so thousands of students walk around these arches on a daily basis with the goal of one day walking under them as a graduate.

My story starts at the cocky age of 18 as I entered the university as a freshman. Like any “I know everything about everything” young scholar, I didn’t believe in hoaxes so my cocky ass danced under the arches specifying it would never happen to me. As time went on, I got myself into a lot of trouble taking in the party scene of Athens, GA until I eventually got myself into trouble that was going to be very hard to get out of. The result..I ended up having to leave the university in the pursuit of getting my life back together (I have written previously about it on this post) and the dream of leaving UGA as a graduate looked bleak at best.

After years of working my ass off collecting the wreckage and trying to assemble a life I could finally be proud of…I started taking classes at a local college to get essential hours and eventually returned to UGA with hopes of graduating. After hitting a perfect window of time, I reentered UGA with several more course hours under my belt and a new outlook on my education. I commuted back and forth from Marietta 3 days a week (1.5 hour drive each way) to take classes and get that degree I sought out during my naive, adolescent years.

After hard work and focus, I was sitting in the center of Sanford Stadium graduating with hundreds of other students from UGA still checking the list of names to make sure mine was there and it wasn’t a dream.

Why This Story..and Why Now

UGA Arches - University of GeorgiaYesterday, I had the chance to walk around the campus of UGA and take in some memories. Coming back with a fresh mind and a different outlook on the past, I was able to walk under those arches as a successful graduate from the university. I didn’t end up taking the cocky path that the 18 year old had in mind. Instead, through self inflicted hurt, I took a much different path that made me who I am today and extremely humbled the inner adolescent.

I use this story illustrate to myself and others that we do not always get to pick the events in our life’s path. It is our job to use our free will to make the best we can of the time we have. When we make excuses why we can’t do something or it is just too hard, we jeopardize the incredible things that can happen in our lives. Far too often, I hear people quitting. If you really want to go after the finer things in life, you have to work hard for them.

When you are going through tough situations in your own life, you need to remember one simple fact…

Just when you think you can’t take it anymore…you are just about to make it.

Great things in life do not come without sacrifices and those that consistently look for handouts will always be begging. Happiness in your own life is accomplished by pursuing the good. Everyone has a choice and no one is a victim of circumstances.

When you take ownership of your own life, your own problems and your own successes, you get to enjoy the victories over defeat. You get to walk under the arches and feel that chill go through your body knowing that you have accomplished something for you. You get to prevail over evil and make the life you always dreamed. Leave the complaining and excuses for those that are never happy with their spot in life because you are going to enact change through action.

You are going to detour around the road blocks with a positive outlook because this is your one and only life to live. There will always be someone who has it harder and someone who has it easier…it is up to you how you handle your own life obstacles…

The Secret To Success – A One Step Process

Right in line with the article yesterday on my Zero Tolerance Policy, I wanted to go into a little bit more depth about getting past the excuses and getting into what it really takes to be successful. Michael Dunlop from and IncomeDiary.com and I were talking during a recorded interview over the weekend (will be published on RobbSutton.com) about what it is that makes some bloggers successful and others not at all. While there are a lot of contributing factors to successful blogging, there are several different themes that run throughout the blogging industry that are absolute truths.

What is the secret to success in blogging? Well…you won’t be too surprised because it is the secret to success in just about everything. Taking action! I can not tell you how many bloggers I talk to on a regular basis that want success in blogging, but they are too busy reading instead of doing. Don’t get me wrong, taking advice from those that have been there before you has a ton of value, but there are a lot of bloggers that get stuck in that rut. All they do is take the advice in the form of free eBook, eCourses and seminars to do absolutely nothing!

That’s right…they spend all of their time and money learning instead of doing. I don’t know if it is fear of failure or the inability to get the car started and start driving, but these serial learners do nothing but talk about their next big idea instead of actually trying it out for themselves.

The Secret To Success In Blogging And In Business

The secret to success in blogging and in business in general is taking action. There are times you are going to fail miserably flat on your face, but at least you tried! Now you can take that knowledge and apply it to your next success. If you spend all of your time worry about whether or not you are going to make it…you never will. If you are waiting on that next informational product or course to make your blog successful….guess what…only you can actually make your blog successful.

You need to sit down and take a serious look at how you spend your time. Are you spending the majority of your time learning or doing? Learning has its place and it is a valuable part of the process, but it is on the only part of the process.

Are you going to be part of the 10% that actually takes action and sees success? Or are you going to be part of the 90% that has the knowledge and does nothing with it? That choice is up to you…and only you can make it happen.

There Will Be Those Days…

They hit you out of the middle of no where. Those days where being a business owner and entrepreneur is not all it is cracked up to be. As much as we like to portray online living and owning your own business as this oasis of freedom and the ability to do whatever the hell you want…it is still running a business and you are still going to have those days when you want to sell everything off, hang it all up and call it a day. Luckily, unlike a 9-5, those days are much farther apart (if you are running your business correctly) and you actually have the control to do something about it (unlike a 9-5)!

Over the course of your new career lifestyle, you are going to have to make tough decisions that are not exactly fun. You are going to have to plan for the future and continue to grow the empire to keep a sustainable model for the future. During that time, there are people that are going to let you down…projects that don’t go exactly the way you wanted them to, income sources that will come and go…

As you continue to hit road bumps in the road, there are two things that are going to keep you successful and not another “I had a business back in the day” statistic.

  1. Your ability to adapt to changing conditions.
  2. Your ability to push through the tough times to get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

No matter what anyone says, every day is not going to be this perfect land in make believe. You have to take each situation in stride and make smart decisions for you and your business for future growth and sustainability. In simpler terms…if owning your own business and making the “internet lifestyle” was that easy…everyone would be doing it and we would all have more money than we could have ever imagined.

What makes the successful online business owners successful is the ability to treat their online ventures like a business so they can push through the rough times with smart, calculated decisions. They do not run back to the life they used to complain about just because a little pressure hit the table. Successful online business owners continue to push towards their goal in the face of adversity.

Are you going to fold under pressure and give up your spot to someone else just because you couldn’t hack it? When things get a little difficult, are you going to go back to someone else choosing your worth with a paycheck? Are you going to let your dreams of being self sufficient fade away just because it is not fun 100% of the time?

Keep your long term goals in mind and continue to achieve and celebrate short term goals that lead to the life you want to build for yourself. This is your one and only…make it worth it.

Getting Over Self Doubt In Search Of Your Goals

Much of blogging and making money online is getting yourself out there and in the public’s eye. For many bloggers and people in general, this can be a hard task to accomplish as you continue to throw yourself to the wolves. Finding success in blogging is accomplished by taking that risk and really putting your feeling and personality into your content. Naturally, your mind is going to want to tell you that everyone else is right and you are not good enough. Who would want to listen to you anyway? What do you have to offer? Maybe I just just give up and not try. Giving in to that fear of failure is much easier than looking it in the face, so why delay the inevitable?

What Would You Blog About For Free?

What should I blog about? I am interested in starting a blog…but what should I write about? I want to make money online but I do not know where to start. These are all examples of questions I (and other bloggers) have been asked over and over again when a potential, future blogger looks at getting into the business. When you are looking at getting into the world of blogging – or looking for your next big idea – there is one way to find that perfect blogging topic that will bring you success. You just need to ask yourself that one simple question. Really? Just one simple question? Well that sounds easy! That is because it is!

What would you blog about for free?

Free? I thought we were going to make some cash from this! Sounds like a stupid question when you are looking to actually profit from this online venture, but it is the only way you are going to find your next successful blogging niche. If you look at 99.9% of successful blogs on in the internet, they all started because the blogger WANTED to write on the topic at hand. They did not start the blog as a get rich quick online extravaganza…they wanted to put their thoughts on a screen about a topic they are passionate about. Yes…for those that are wondering…this includes the bloggers that blog about blogging and online marketing. They happen to be passionate on the subject and the monetary value is a bonus.

This sounds like a simple solution, but it is the one thing that most beginning bloggers overlook. They see these other bloggers making money from their writings online and the first thing they ask themselves is “what can I write about that will make money?” The #1 issue with this thoughtful thinking is that potential readers are going to cut through the BS and see your blog for what it really is…a feeble attempt at online income because you saw someone else do it.

When you are so passionate about your blogging topic that you are willing to throw up your engaging content on the computer screen for free, that comes through in your writing and readers will content with this passion. And…news flash…you are going to be making nothing at first anyway, so if you want your blog to withstand the test of time and prevent blogger burnout…you need to actually like what you are writing about anyway!

So…before you start up a new online venture…ask yourself…would I write about this for free?

6 Reasons Why They Are Rich And You Are Not

You run the thought through your head all the time. As you drive by these gigantic houses drooling over their exotic cars and refreshing pool, you wonder…how the hell did they get all of that money? What did they do that I am not? How are they so rich? They must know something I do not. They must have fantastic luck. They…they…they…they…wait…all I am doing is making excuses that make me feel better about not being successful when THEY are! Last night, I was sitting having dinner with another aspiring entrepreneur (who after only a month of self employment is doing extremely well) and we talked about what makes an entrepreneur successful.

You see it all the time…working your 9-5 surrounded by some incredibly smart people. They make a decent wage while putting in their hours day after day. While you are out grocery shopping or filling up your car at the gas station, you run in to an extremely wealthy entrepreneur who has started his own business and been extremely successful. The surprising part…the rich entrepreneur seems to have half the intellect of the 9-5 workers that you are around all day that just collect a check. So why are these two members of the business world so drastically different and what makes a person really successful?

6 Reasons Why They Are Rich And You Are Not

  1. They own their own business – It is extremely hard to get rich working for someone else. 99% of workers will never make it big as there are only about .5% of jobs that will actually create a monetary return that will get you there. So…you end up working your entire life to make someone else a lot of money. The entrepreneur owns his own business. He is able to leverage his strengths and turn those strengths into profits. What many aspiring rich people do not understand is that you do not need a Fortune 500 company to be extremely wealthy. Most of the gigantic houses and fancy cars you see are owned by small business owners…not huge corporations. By owning your own small business, you are (generally speaking) able to keep expenses low and profits high. This equals a lot of cash for you to take home in your pocket. Now you are the guy that everyone else is working hard to make rich.
  2. They have the self employed mentality – What is the self employed mentality? They are willing to put in the beginning hours to make their idea successful. Many want-a-be rich people want the money and successful business without putting in the beginning sweat and tears that make a small company successful. Most of these extremely successful entrepreneurs put in late hours and weekend work in the beginning. You are not going to make it big and enjoy the fruits of the rich lifestyle without putting in some work. If you are expecting to work 9-5 and see that kind of monetary success…you might as well just stay in your current job and collect your small paycheck week in and week out. Anything that is worth having…comes with sacrifice.
  3. They took the risk - Rich entrepreneurs took the risk that you are not willing to take. They jumped off the cliff with their idea and made it work. You…on the other hand…are talking about your great idea all the time but you never take that first step in fear of failure. Success is a summation of calculated risks and knowledge from mistakes. If you are not willing to take that first step, then you will never see the riches that they are seeing today.
  4. They are almost never right - Seems like a weird theory doesn’t it? Extremely successful, rich entrepreneurs will often tell you that they have made more mistakes in their lifetime than successes. What separates the rich entrepreneur from the employee is the ability to learn from these mistakes and apply that knowledge to the next round. Have you ever run into one of those employees that are ALWAYS right? Have you ever noticed that they never move forward in life? That is because the man that believes he already knows everything has no room to grow. The successful entrepreneur is continually adapting and growing and this makes his income continue to grow with him. Rich entrepreneurs do not waste time telling you how great they are…they are too busy putting their thoughts into action and they are not afraid to be wrong.
  5. They reinvest in themselves and their business - What are you going to do when you make your first $100,000? Blow it on a car or a house? The rich entrepreneur didn’t. He reinvested that money into the business and gave it a capital infusion that allowed the business to grow quicker. Many failed businesses are the result of poor fiscal planning. Those that do not reinvest back into their future are doomed for failure. This means you might have to be a little patient and leave the Ferrari in the dealership for a couple more years. The good news…when you go to buy one you could actually afford to buy 10.
  6. They never give up – Successful, rich entrepreneurs do not give up at the first sign of failure. Where most aspiring rich people would throw in the towel claiming that they are not lucky enough or are the victim of circumstances, the rich guy gets back on the horse and tries again. This motivation and ability to keep going through the tough times is what will separate the successful from the complacent.

So as you can see by these 6 reasons, it is not how smart you are that generates success that will bring you riches that you never could have dreamed of…it is the ability to have a different mindset that breeds success. If you continually do the same routine everyday…day in and day out…collecting your paycheck with the hope that someone is going to give you a chance one day…you are going to continue that cycle until you hopefully save up enough money to retire at the prime age of 70 something. Or…you can start now…changing the way you think and allowing yourself to be successful just like those “lucky” guys that have the huge houses and fancy cars. It is completely up to you and you are the only one that stands in the way of your success.
