Is Being Connected All the Time, Helping or Hurting Your Business?

There is no denying that the world of business has changed dramatically over the past decade. The limitations of the traditional office no longer exist. With the growing prevalence of wireless internet, web enabled smart phones, and video conferencing the only thing tying us to the office is our accustomed familiarity with it. Many would argue that this is the crowning achievement of business technology. The ability to stay connected to the heart beat of your business at all times. While this has great appeal to some it could also be argued that this is taking away from our business prowess; chaining us to our work at all times. So does the reality of these technological leaps leave us in a better or worse position for our business? That argument is one of great debate.

Connectivity And Business Hours

The days of working nine to five have long since past. Before the dawn of limitless business connectivity the savvy business operator was putting in far more hours than the traditional 40 hour work week. Long days at the office pouring over in to late nights had become the norm rather than the exception.

With limitless wireless connectivity available the need to be tied to ones office has evaporated. Long hours once spent in cubicles have been replaced by equally long working hours from the comfort of a living room sofa. The days of being confined to an office building have been replaced often times by the beach umbrella and a portable laptop computer. This new age of technology has afforded us a very close connection to our business. When looking at any particular market the ability to respond quickly is paramount. Whether responding to your clients email of concern via your wirelessly connected smart phone, or seizing the perfect moment to purchase a stock of interest; the ability to instantly react, without delay is one of great value.

The Price Of Instant Information

While the age of constant connectivity offers us unparalleled advantages in business that have never been available before, it ultimately comes with a price. It has become increasingly difficult to divorce ones self from the business that we conduct. In the past, even while spending long days working, there was always an opportunity to retreat away from ones work and to simply relax. While this opportunity was not always taken, it was always present.

In the day of eternal connectivity the ability to “close up shop” has been greatly diminished. There is a sense that when one is not working, they are not being productive. Enjoyable activities are now often interrupted by business notifications from our phones. The sanctity of family time is often interrupted by the pressing need to react instantly to a business event. I, myself, have woken up in the middle of the night to check whether or not an expected email had arrived in my “inbox.” This surely can not be a healthy practice. In truth if we allow it, our business can become the only facet of our life and it can easily drown out all else.

While wireless internet service connectivity has allowed us to work harder and work smarter it has ultimately come with a potentially steep price tag. More than ever it is important to keep ones priorities secured firmly in the forefront of our thoughts. In running away from all that new technology has afforded us we are certain to lose out on many great business opportunities. Conversely, by embracing all that is available to us we run the risk of abandoning everything else in our lives. Limitless connectivity forces us to walk a dangerously fine line. Only in seeking a balance between our business and personal lives can we truly be happy and successful in all that we do.

Blogging Labs Tips To Disconnect

This great guest post by Robert Fulton outlines how we can get our minds wrapped around working 24/7 very easily. We find ourselves needing to obsessively check stats and never leave the comfort of our blogging or social media much like a kid that won’t take a nap in the fear they will miss something. The following tips are ones that we use to step away from the online world and join the living once in awhile to keep our sanity.

  1. Take Scheduled Breaks Throughout The Day – It is easier to be more productive in your work time and your leisure time if it is scheduled throughout the day. When you are just going at random, both time periods can be inefficient as you mix them together. Try to plan out your day and schedule your off time just as you schedule your tasks. It will make you better at both.
  2. Turn Off Email and Stat Alerts On Mobile Devices During Dinners or Walks – When it is time to take time off, turn off all notifications on your phone and other mobile devices to top the interruption and want to check what is going on in the online world. Without the distraction, it will be easier to relax.
  3. Take Back Your Weekends – Unless there is a HUGE project going on (like a full redesign), I try to keep my weekends as weekends. You will notice that my Twitter and Facebook usage drops drastically and I rarely…if ever…post blog articles on the weekends. If you must publish articles, try to schedule them on Friday and take your weekend as time to relax.
  4. Spend Time With The People You Care AboutAll of this is nothing without personal relationships. I would rather have less money and a happier life than a rich guy with no friends or family. When you spend time with the people in your life that you care about…really spend time with them as they are what really matters in this world.
  5. Get Rid Of Time Wasting Activities – If you want to be more productive and have a happier life, get rid of the time wasting activities in your life to be more productive. Is your life going to end if you don’t watch your favorite TV show or you close Facebook for awhile and miss that funny inside joke? Probably not. Use the time you have wisely and live your life to the fullest.

This is our one and only life and I doubt we are supposed to waste it away working ourselves to death and obsessing over the online world. Plan your work and work your plan. The rest will fall into place naturally.

The Secret Key To Productivity and Relaxation

If there is one thing we all need to do in this world, it is to relax and be more productive. Fast paced lifestyles full of stress that will not matter 5 years down the road is a quick highway to a heart attack. As we continue to make every thought…every action…every annoyance a reason to stress and worry, we are aging ourselves and crippling our careers, professional life and blogs at the same time. The self destructive circle of worry and stress will not only be hazardous to you health, but it will restrict and strangle what you are trying to accomplish in your own life.

So what is the secret key to productivity and relaxation? Stop worrying about things that do not really matter.

How To Stop Worrying About Things That Don’t Really Matter

It’s not an easy road by any means and typing up this article is far easier than following this theory in practice. If you could rid your life of all worry and stress related to people and events that do not really matter, can you imagine how much more relaxed and productive you would be in the long haul? Completely realizing this is not an easy, here are a couple of suggestions, tips and random thoughts to help you down the road.

Forget Things That Do Not Matter In 5 Days – So often, we get caught up in the days events that we get completely worked up in scenarios and thought processes that are going to have little to no impact on our lives 5 days from now. Once you realize you are in a circle of misguided thinking that is a complete waste of time, the trick is getting out of it. By stepping back out of the situation at hand, you can see that there is no effect on your life in the near future. Is it really worth getting all stressed out about if there is no impact?

Ignore Gossipers - It is tempting to sit around and listen, converse and spread the latest gossip of the day. But…by engaging in these activities, you are adding stress and wasted time into your life. Not only that…you are inviting even more stress and wasted time in the future by getting yourself involved with people who gossip frequently. Get rid of the wasted time in your life and use those precious minutes to enrich and prosper. One other thing to note…when they are not talking to you…they are probably talking about you.

Rid Your Life Of Busy Work – There are a lot of things we do in life that are simply to fill time and feel busy. By completing busy work, it makes you feel…for a split second…like you have done something, when in reality…all you have done is filled time with meaningless tasks. If there is busy work to be done, outsource what you can to free up time for real production.

Realize You Can Not Change People – There are some people in this world that believe they can change their friends, colleagues and random acquaintances. What they do not realize is that those same people are in the process of trying to change you. By realizing you are not going to change people and who they are…you can focus more on how to be productive within the given circumstances. If you are worrying about how you are going to make someone different, you are wasting your time.

Woosaaa! – Finally, every now and then you need to just step back and take a deep breath. Everything always looks better with a fresh set of eyes and if you find your heart racing and blood pressure boiling…step back for a few minutes so you can get an honest perspective. Nothing is worse than getting into a destructive thinking pattern because you are worrying yourself in circles.

Our lives are filled with wasted time and energy spent on worrying about people, places and events. By cutting out most of that wasted energy and channeling it to more productive activities…we are able to enrich our lives and forgo the early grave. As you go throughout the day, take an honest look at how you fill your mental real estate. Are you worrying about things that do not really matter in the long run? How is that effecting your life? Your health? Your relationships?

What do you do to stop the cycle?

Video Podcast: How To Increase Blogging and Life Productivity

Last night, I was talking to Kelly Diels and we got onto the subject of what I have had going on the past year and my plans for 2010. She asked me a question that I hadn’t really thought about seriously…but was doing automatically.

When you are looking at how you spend your time and how you want to grow you blog, there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done when you want to. Time is our only constraint in life…so we have to figure out how to use it efficiently.

When things started shooting towards the stars with my blogging (and I thank those lucky stars every day), I really had to change the way I was living to accomplish my goals. The following video podcast are my thoughts on basic time management and how things changed in my life. It also touches on relationships and how we need to handle them as we grow our blogs.

It’s not too long…just over 5 minutes. This video was shot with my MacBook Pro built-in iSight camera and iMovie ’10. I didn’t use my expensive editing software and cameras (I have a background in post production) to show that you do not need a full out editing suite to video blog effectively.

Word of warning: I look much younger than I am! I hear that comment every time I post a video! Also, this was a quick cut together…one take…just throw it up there. This is me on a Friday morning! I am going to try to get in more of these types of posts…so look for more in the future from RobbSutton.com.

How much time do you waste on unproductive activities?

As we look into our daily lives, we need to ask ourselves how much time we actually spend being completely unproductive. This is a question that I answer just as bad as you probably do. Are you sitting in front of you computer screen right now with Facebook, a favorite forum and a funny video from a friend all open at once? Do you have thousands of posts and hours logged in on that favorite forum while updating your Facebook status 12 times a day? Let me guess…some worthless TV show is on in the background as you wonder if your favorite dancer is going to make it through the next stage of “Do You Think You Can Dance” (don’t lie…if you are a guy you know your wife/girlfriend/hopefully something soon makes you watch it too!). You continually go through worthless activity motions as the back of your head screams at you to stop what you are doing and start being productive. Instead, laziness sets in and we put off that activity until a later time that never comes…

Throughout our daily lives, we use the excuse that we have been so busy today to condone lazy behavior that takes away from our goal. Now…I am not saying that we are going to be productive 100% of the day and every minute not moving forward is taking a step backward. That kind of mentality runs you into complete burnout and frustration. What I am saying is that we spend an incredible amount of time on activities that add little to no value to our lives because they are easy and mindless. We sit in front of a computer screen and browse for hours on end…we watch TV and movies until our eyes are popping out of our heads…we go through other activites during the day where we consciously think to ourselves…”I really should be doing (insert productive activity here) right now…not this…”

My Challenge to Myself and to You

Here is my challenge to you (and myself). As you go through the next 2 weeks, listen to that voice in your head that can think of something productive over something lazy. Make a solid effort to be more productive in your daily life to achieve the goals you have set but never obtained. By being more productive, you should be happier and more stress free as you go to bed at night with the knowledge that you made this day on this Earth more fulfilling.

Some tips to help you out…

  • Plan Your Downtime – Everyone needs a break, so plan periods of time to relax and let your mind wonder off into whatever magical land you want it to. By scheduling this time (and sticking to that schedule), you will not get burned out or find yourself using more relax time than anticipated.
  • Make Lists – I hate making lists as much as everyone, but they are extremely efficient when it comes to getting tasks done in an organized manner. When you make your list, prioritize activities with levels of importance. This will help you realize what you need to get done right away and what you can do if you get done early.
  • Mentally Prepare Yourself – If you are not on board mentally with being more productive during this period of time, it is not going to happen. You need to change your mindset and prepare for a different way of thinking to help get you through the learning curve.

The goal during this two weeks of mass productivity is to change your lifestyle. Once you get used to being productive, it will become easier with time and by the end…you will have transformed yourself from a lazy media absorber to a productive human being with realized goals. We all want the positive aspects that come to our lives by being more productive, but it is up to us to get off our asses and actually do it.

Are you moving forward or standing still?

With the start of each new day, I ask myself one simple question…

Are you moving forward or standing still?

While it seems like a simple question from the outside, it is really complex in terms of how we spend our days. Many times, we fill our days with activities and events that have zero value to our goals and our life in general. We waste massive amounts of time on things that create no added value to our lives and instead suck the life out of the productivity we could be having in search of the goals we have set for ourselves. Even while we are engaging in these rather worthless activities, we will often think about what we could be doing that would be more productive. Instead of stopping the time sucking, worthless waste, we push off what is productive to a later time or date. It is our mind and laziness that is keeping us from living the life that we have always dreamed of. The truth is…later never comes and it is only now that we can really start to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.
