Some companies are getting into or have gotten into a mode of outsourcing departments. You may be doing a fantastic job and you may be standing out, but you can still be laid off if your entire department is outsourced or contracted out to artificially enhance the balance sheet. I lost my job in 2003 when my department was contracted out. Layoffs started in 1992, and outsourcing started by 2000. I should have left when the layoffs and early retirements happened every two or three years. It was a matter of time before it got to me.One more thing you have to keep your eye on is the writing on the wall. When companies get into an outsourcing model, you need to see it and decide before you're hit whether to jump ship early. There are many departments in companies that are needed but may not be considered essential to the bottom line. Those can range from analytical lab services to accounting and payroll.Keep an eye on what is going on in your company and if the signs are there, consider making a preemptive job change.Sherri

I think you’re right, but I think you left out one scenario that everyone should consider. Luckily at my "day job" I am in a stable company and my job is secure but you are right about still needing to stand out.We did a job fair recently that started at 1 p.m. People started getting in line before 10 a.m. and over 1,400 people showed up and we were only looking for 50 people.Standing out in the crowed is going to be a really big deal

I think you hit the nail on the head here.
